David Gilbertson has been selected as the University’s new associate vice president and chief information officer.

His appointment, which takes effect in January, was announced recently by Barry Feldman, vice president and chief operating officer.

Gilbertson has served for 26 years in the U.S. Army and is currently the deputy commander of the Army’s Institute of Surgical Research, a world-renowned research institution that works alongside many of the nation’s top universities.

He was previously executive program manager for the Pentagon’s $1.5 billion Electronic Health Record, where he managed an annual budget of $350 million and provided leadership for a staff of several hundred. He also served as CIO of the Tripler Army Medical Center and as CIO of the Army Medical Department Center and School, which has more than 3,000 faculty and staff and serves 15,000 undergraduate and graduate students.

He is experienced in developing strategic information technology plans, implementing information technology governance, managing services, providing customer support, developing applications, and supporting academic computing.

“I am confident that David’s extensive IT background and experience in academic research institutions will help us continue to improve IT services for the entire University community,” Feldman said.

Gilbertson is a summa cum laude graduate of the University of Georgia at Athens, where he graduated with a bachelor of business administration, and has a master’s degree in medical information sciences from Stanford University.

He was selected by a committee chaired by Debra Kendall, Board of Trustees Distinguished Professor of Molecular and Cell Biology. Other members of the committee were Salome Raheim, dean of the School of Social Work; Steve Kremer, associate vice president; Richard Jones, associate professor of physics; and Charlie Eaton, controller.

Gilbertson will take over from David Martel, who has served as interim CIO.
