Joseph Glaz, a professor of statistics in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, has been named a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS).

An induction ceremony took place Aug. 3, at the Joint Statistical Meetings/IMS Annual Meeting in Washington D.C.

Glaz received the award for international leadership in the field of scan statistics, and for significant contributions in multivariate dependence, sequential analysis, and applied probability. He was also recognized for excellent editorial service.

Each nominee is assessed by a committee of peers for the award. In 2009, 39 nominations were reviewed and 17 selected as Fellows.

Created in 1935, the Institute of Mathematical Statistics is a member organization that fosters the development and dissemination of the theory and applications of statistics and probability. It has 4,500 active members worldwide.

Approximately 5 percent of current IMS members have earned the status of Fellow.
