On Saturday, March 20, more than 200 high school virtuosos of science from across New England will descend on the University of Connecticut campus for the 2010 Northeast Regional Science Bowl (NRSB). The bowl, organized and sponsored by the School of Engineering, will feature both a Jeopardy!-style quiz competition and a model solar-powered car race.

The morning portion of the science bowl will pit four-member teams against each other in a round-robin tournament that will determine the afternoon brackets, when double-elimination matches will decide the regional champion team.  In each round, the three teams assigned per room will attempt to be the first to press the buzzer and correctly answer the challenging math and science questions posed by a moderator.

A total of 36 teams from Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, and New Hampshire will participate in several rounds of competition, and the group whose combined speed and knowledge surpasses all opponents will receive an all-expenses paid trip to the National Science Bowl tournament in Washington, D..C from April 29 to May 4, 2010. The model solar-powered car race will pit three-member teams against each other in a test to achieve maximum speed and power.

The event will take place in the Information Technologies Engineering (ITE) building on the Storrs campus beginning at 8:10 a.m. and conclude with the awards ceremony at 5:15 p.m.  All are invited to attend, observe, and cheer on the competitors.

The event is sponsored by UTC Power and Gerber Scientific, along with the UConn School of Engineering. Further details of the Northeast Regional Science Bowl – including directions to the venue and a complete schedule of events – are available on the web.

Media Note: Due to the nature of the competition, some media restrictions will be in place during certain parts of the event. (For instance, contest rules strictly prohibit the recording of questions and answers by any audience member because the questions may be used in future competitions.) However, participating teams will be available to media before and after each round of competition, and media are welcome and encouraged to attend the solar-powered car races.
