Dining Services Switching to Paper Plates, Cups

To conserve water during the ongoing drought, disposable products will be used in the dining halls.

In an effort to conserve water in the face of ongoing drought conditions, the Department of Dining Services will begin using paper plates and cups and plastic silverware in all eight residential dining halls, beginning Monday, Sept. 27.

“Our dish machines, while water-efficient, still utilize large quantities of water,” said Dennis Pierce, director of dining services, in an e-mail message to the Storrs campus. “We will minimize the use of water only to sanitize service-ware, and hope that our efforts and students’ understanding will set an example to the University community.”

The University serves 180,000 meals a week.

On Sept. 13, the University issued a “Stage III Drought Advisory” notifying the campus of both voluntary and mandatory water conservation measures.

“While our water system is able to meet current and projected demands, operating the supply wells can add stress to the local rivers that are already affected by the drought,” wrote Gene Roberts of UConn Facilities and Rich Miller, director of the University’s Office of Environmental Policy, in a message to the University.

“We ask for and appreciate your continued support and cooperation,” they added. “By reducing consumption during these dry weather conditions, you can help us protect local streams and the aquatic life they support.”

Dining Services will continue to use disposable products until drought conditions end. The University will provide regular updates through e-mails and on the Facilities website.
