An exhibit at the Lyman Maynard Stowe Library shows the impact the years can have on the condition of books.

Jenny Miglus, the librarian at the Hartford Medical Society’s Historical Library, created the exhibit to coincide with Preservation Week, April 24 to 30 as designated by the American Library Association.

“Books age, just the way we do, and this was put together to show some of the hazards that can happen to old books,” Miglus says. “Some of the books in our collection are as old as 500 years.”

The ALA says the campaign “was developed to promote the understanding and importance of care for personal and community cultural heritage collections, such as books, documents, photographs, textiles, paintings, sculptures, furniture and decorative arts.”
