Dan Nevelos was only 26 years old when he was diagnosed with an infection that seriously damaged his heart.

“When you’re young you don’t think of these things happening,” explains Nevelos. “Here I was with a young wife, we had only been married two years and we were planning to get a house and then to get hit by this out of the blue is just shocking.”

Nevelos was referred to Dr. Bruce Liang, the head of the Pat and Jim Calhoun Cardiology Center at the UConn Health Center. Thanks to Liang’s expert guidance and careful monitoring, Nevelos’ heart has remained strong and he’s been able to avoid surgery.

“I feel like I’m in good hands,” says Nevelos. “And that really means a lot as you’re talking about very serious things, life or death, when your heart’s involved.”
