Patti Bostic, executive director of Recreational Services in the Division of Athletics, was presented with the 2010 National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) Honor Award on Friday, April 23. It was presented during the Association’s annual conference in Anaheim, Calif. The award is presented for outstanding achievements in the profession and exemplary service to the Association.
Bostic, who joined UConn in 1988, has been a dedicated and active member of NIRSA, serving on 49 different committees and work teams in the organization. She has served on the NIRSA Board of Directors and was the group’s president during 2000-01. Bostic has served more years in elected positions on the NIRSA Board of Directors than anyone else in the history of the organization.
As executive director of recreational services at UConn, Bostic is responsible for the management of a comprehensive recreational sports program, which services students, faculty, and staff at UConn. Recreational Services has nearly 600,000 participations annually.
Bostic has also served on a number of University committees, including the planning committee for the Husky Week of Welcome, the Environmental Policy Advisory Council, the Commission on Substance Abuse, the President’s Commission on the Status of Women, and with the Center for Students with Disabilities.
Jeffrey Hathaway, director of athletics, congratulated Bostic on the award. “Patti has been an integral member of the UConn campus for over two decades,” he said. “She has staunchly promoted the benefits of a healthy lifestyle to our campus community, and the extraordinary participation rates in our Recreational Services program reflect the ongoing efforts of Patti and her staff. We are proud the NIRSA has recognized Patti for her leadership within the organization, the Recreation/Intramurals field, and at our University.”
A native of White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., Bostic earned her undergraduate degree in physical education and a master’s degree from Marshall University in Huntington, W.Va. Prior to coming to UConn, she served as director of intramurals and recreational activities at Stony Brook University.
