Why did you choose UConn?
I chose UConn initially because of a campus tour that I had during my senior year of high school. During this tour I had a presenter by the name of Dr. Cooper who really convinced me that I wanted to study Sport Management here at the University of Connecticut through his passion for the topic and the attention to detail he demonstrated through his presentation. I believed he showcased what I wanted to get out of my undergraduate studies.

What’s your major/field of study, and what drew you to it?
I am a sport management major who was drawn to it through my personal involvement in sports throughout high school. Seeing how my experiences in sport taught me life lessons and helped shape me into the individual I am today pushed me to enter the sport industry.

Did you have a favorite professor or class?
My favorite class was “Introduction to Sport-Based Youth Development” with Dr. Evanovich. This course forced me to examine cultural norms and evaluate society through a critical lens. I was excited to attend class daily because of the opportunity to hear different perspectives and then reflect on the new information that we learned through writing and everyday life.

What’s one thing that surprised you about UConn?
I was surprised by how much the professors wanted to see their students succeed in their courses and life after graduation. All of the professors that I had in the Sport Management program were willing to meet virtually or on campus to discuss course materials and offering to review materials for graduate school or job applications.

What are your plans after graduation/receiving your degree?
After graduation, I plan to return to UConn for my master’s degree in sport management, and I plan to be a graduate assistant for Husky Nutrition and Sport at Wish Elementary School. I truly look forward to these next steps.

“The Sport Management program educated me on a lot of the possible avenues in the sport industry. It opened my eyes to areas of the industry that I would not have known existed.” — Kevin Slisz

How has UConn prepared you for the next chapter in life?

The Sport Management program educated me on a lot of the possible avenues in the sport industry. It opened my eyes to areas of the industry that I would not have known existed. In addition, it taught me the value of relationship building. Many opportunities in the real world are presented through connections, and these relationships provide the opportunity to learn from one another.

Any advice for incoming students?
My advice for incoming students is simple: in order to be successful as a student, you need an organizational system that allows you to keep track of your assignments. This is a time when school and life balance is essential, and an organizational system makes this possible. Enjoy your time, but remember what you are looking to accomplish at UConn.

What’s one thing everyone should do during their time at UConn?
Everyone should attend both a women’s and men’s basketball game at Gampel Pavilion. The atmosphere is electric and an unforgettable experience.

What will always make you think of UConn?
March Madness will always make me think of UConn because the experience of the men’s basketball team winning the national championship my senior year at the watch party will never be forgotten.
