Sandra Chafouleas Receives Award for Mentorship

The UConn AAUP honored Professor Sandra Chafouleas, Board of Trustees Distinguished Professor in the Department of Educational Psychology, as the 2019 recipient of the Edward C. Marth Mentorship Award.

The UConn AAUP honored Professor Sandra Chafouleas as the 2019 recipient of the Edward C. Marth Mentorship Award at a reception on Thursday, April, 25, 2019. Dean Kent Holsinger from The Graduate School at UConn presided over the ceremony and led the toast honoring her many contributions.

Professor Chafouleas is a Board of Trustees Distinguished Professor in the Department of Educational Psychology. In addition, she is the Co-Director of the Collaboratory on School and Child Health in the Institute for Collaboration on Health, Intervention, and Policy (CHIP). She is also a Fellow of both the American Psychological Association and the Association for Psychological Science. Also of note, in 2009, Professor Chafouleas was awarded the UConn Alumni Association Award for Excellence in Graduate Teaching.

Excellence in Mentorship

Professor Chafouleas is being recognized for her outstanding leadership and dedication to excellence in mentoring graduate students. Notably, she is instrumental in building a top-notch graduate program in School Psychology at the University of Connecticut. She mentored 19 doctoral students and 6 post-docs in school psychology over the past 20 years. She also served as the PI on an Institute of Education Sciences postdoctoral training project.

Furthermore, Professor Chafouleas fosters post-graduation networks of continued mentorship. She continues to have close contact with many of her former students, both professionally and personally. She publishes extensively with her former students.

In addition, her mentoring philosophy captures both teaching and advising which draws from her experience as a school psychologist and administrator. She notes, “I have been grateful for the opportunity to advance my own passions through collaborations with a multitude of postdoctoral scholars, graduate students, and undergraduate students.”

Austin H. Johnson, PhD, BCBA, a former graduate advisee of Professor Chafouleas and Assistant Professor, Graduate School of Education, University of California, Riverside, nominated Chafoleas for the award. He said of his mentoring relationship with Chafouleas, “Sandy’s commitment, compassion, and exceptional scholarship have made a lasting impact on me and many other former graduate students. Working with Sandy has been one of the highlights of my personal and professional life; as a mentor, a colleague, and a friend, I feel deeply grateful to count her as my graduate advisor.”
