UConn Health introduces its new chief of vascular and endovascular surgery.

Dr. Kwame Amankwah joins UConn Health from the State University of New York (Upstate) in Syracuse, where he was on the vascular surgery faculty for 15 years, during which time he served as the medical school’s surgical clerkship director, director of the Thoracic Outlet Program, and chief of Interventional Radiology at the Syracuse VA Hospital.

Amankwah’s expertise includes complex aortic disease, vascular trauma, aneurysmal disease of the thoracic and abdominal aorta, carotid arterial disease, peripheral vascular disease, mesenteric and renal disease, thoracic outlet syndrome, pulmonary embolism, venous disease and dialysis access and maintenance. His interventional radiology experience includes urological disease, hepatobiliary disease, CT-guided imaging procedures, and ultrasound-guided procedures.

“I am excited to be joining an outstanding institution,” Amankwah says. “UConn Health is a leader in the region for its research, education and health care. Its dedication to providing cutting edge health care is evident and the recent expansion of staff, equipment and the campus demonstrates its commitment to the region and I am honored to be a part of that process.”

At the national level, Amankwah is actively involved in education working with the NBME, the American Board of Surgery and American Board of Vascular Surgery. He fellowship trained in vascular surgery at Yale University and in interventional radiology at Texas Tech University. His medical degree is from the Albany Medical College.

“My mission for vascular surgery at UConn Health is to be the primary choice for vascular care by referring physicians and individuals in our region,” Amankwah says. “We are dedicated to providing comprehensive, collaborative and innovative care to all the members of our diverse community. Our emphasis will be to deliver exceptional care.”
