(Cover design by Stacey Shea, Connecticut Magazine senior designer)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>What do a Connecticut assistant attorney general, a local traffic reporter\/talk show host, a brewery owner, and the president and CEO of a biotechnology startup have in common?<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re among the nine young UConn alums named to <em>Connecticut Magazine\u2019s<\/em> 2015 \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.connecticutmag.com\/Connecticut-Magazine\/February-2015\/40-Under-40-Class-of-2015\/\">40 Under 40<\/a>\u201d list, which honors the state\u2019s \u201cbest and brightest among Generation Next.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The diverse roster includes artists, community leaders, entertainers, farmers, philanthropists, and more.<\/p>\n<p>The named UConn alumni demonstrate \u201cthe caliber, depth, and breadth of what our alumni are doing out there,\u201d says Montique Cotton Kelly, executive director of the UConn Alumni Association. \u201cTo have such representation across majors and disciplines is what UConn is all about. We couldn\u2019t be more excited to see their names on this list.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Vision Visionary<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_100005\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-100005\" style=\"width: 240px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Nicole-Wagner-photo-.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-100005 size-full img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Nicole-Wagner-photo-.jpg\" alt=\"Nicole Wagner.\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 240px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 240\/300;\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-100005\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nicole Wagner &#8217;07 (CLAS), &#8217;13 Ph.D.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On one end of the spectrum is Nicole Wagner \u201907 (CLAS), \u201913 Ph.D., a postdoctoral fellow who completed both her undergraduate degree and Ph.D. at the University. Wagner is the president and CEO of LambdaVision, a biotechnology company founded through the UConn Ventures fund that is developing a protein-based retinal implant to cure certain types of blindness.<\/p>\n<p>While earning her B.S. in molecular and cell biology, Wagner worked in the lab of Professor Robert Birge, with whom she founded the company in 2009. When she first joined Birge\u2019s lab, Wagner says, she planned to become a medical doctor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I got involved in the lab, my passions changed,\u201d she says. \u201cI started really enjoying the research part of things. The retinal implant project was a great opportunity to blend my interests in medicine, vision, and research.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The founding of the company, which is part of UConn\u2019s Technology Incubation Program, has not only allowed Wagner to pursue her passions, but also given her an opportunity to be a leader and learn more about the business end, she says.<\/p>\n<p>With the completion of a recent \u201cproof-of-concept\u201d experiment and two new grants from the National Science Foundation and the National Institute of Health, Wagner and her team are advancing toward their goal of restoring vision to patients.<\/p>\n<p>As for the \u201c40 Under 40\u201d nod, it\u2019s icing on the cake.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s certainly very exciting, definitely a big surprise to me,\u201d Wagner says. \u201cI\u2019m honored to be on the list. It\u2019s a good feeling for sure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Entrepreneur with a Plan<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_100010\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-100010\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/ConorHorrigan.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-100010 img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/ConorHorrigan.jpg\" alt=\"Conor Horrigan\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 200px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 200\/300;\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-100010\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Conor Horrigan &#8217;11 MBA.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Conor Horrigan \u201911 MBA has said it before and he\u2019ll say it again: \u201cUConn\u2019s paw prints are all over\u201d his company, Half Full Brewery in Stamford.<\/p>\n<p>After leaving a high-paying job on Wall Street to follow his dreams, Horrigan enrolled at UConn and, working closely with professors in the MBA program, created the business plan and strategy that helped him win the seed money for the brewery and that his company still uses today.<\/p>\n<p>Horrigan, whose company is as much about the story as it is about the beer, said he appreciates that the \u201c40 Under 40\u201d list recognizes those who are pursuing their dreams.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel honored, but I\u2019m not sure if I necessarily feel deserving,\u201d he says. \u201cWe\u2019re trying to build something very special. As project director for the New Haven MOMS Partnership, she coordinates various agencies across the city to support the well-being of mothers and families by making services more easily available to those who need it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conor Horrigan \u201911 MBA, <\/strong><em>32, Litchfield<br \/>\nBrewery owner<\/em><strong><br \/>\nWhy he\u2019s on the list: <\/strong>Horrigan walked away from an unrewarding Wall Street job to open Stamford\u2019s Half Full Brewery, a beer company dedicated to reminding people to look on the sunny side of life. An assistant attorney general, he serves as chair of the Attorney General\u2019s Privacy Task Force and is the state\u2019s lead attorney on all matters involving data security and privacy. Shuman was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at age 7, when her life expectancy was just 12. She celebrated her 38th birthday in September (her current life expectancy), and is still running \u2013 her lifelong passion.
