(Peter Morenus\/UConn Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When the trustee of a large charitable trust in Florida sought a researcher to lead an international think tank to drive the field of bladder cancer care and research, he found <a href=\"http:\/\/uconndocs.uchc.edu\/Home\/Physician?profileId=Taylor-John\">Dr. John Taylor<\/a>, urologic surgeon at UConn Health.<\/p>\n<p>Now, the Leo and Anne Albert Institute for Bladder Cancer Care and Research is up and running, with Taylor as its founder, president, and director.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_100259\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-100259\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/JohnTaylorwPatient150203b079.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-100259 img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/JohnTaylorwPatient150203b079.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. John Taylor speaks with a patient at UConn Health.\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/JohnTaylorwPatient150203b079.jpg 630w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/JohnTaylorwPatient150203b079-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/JohnTaylorwPatient150203b079-150x100.jpg 150w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 400px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 400\/267;\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-100259\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. John Taylor speaks with a urology patient at UConn Health.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cBladder cancer is an orphan disease, which means it\u2019s generally underrecognized and underfunded,\u201d Taylor says. \u201cThis is one of the few standalone institutes focusing on an orphan disease.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Support from the Leo and Anne Albert Charitable Trust enables the institute to bring together thought leaders in bladder cancer from across the world. &#8220;From that,&#8221; Taylor says, &#8220;we can generate translational and clinical projects to improve or standardize care for bladder cancer patients, and establish best practices in care while we work to find cures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The institute\u2019s mission includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Producing research that critically assesses aspects of patient care and attempts to develop more standardized and scientifically sound treatment pathways.<\/li>\n<li>Offering seed funding for collaborative research projects that are developed through the symposium. This year funding was awarded to a team of researchers from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Harvard University, Vanderbilt University, and Penn State University.<\/li>\n<li>Providing summer fellowships for medical students in Taylor\u2019s lab to develop the next generation of clinician scientists who will focus on bladder cancer.<\/li>\n<li>Holding an annual symposium to assemble some of the world\u2019s brightest minds in bladder cancer to create scientific collaborations and strengthen existing ones. It was her husband\u2019s dying wish to set up a trust for the purpose of \u201chelping people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I\u2019ve done with that rather broad mission is, look to the illnesses that caused their deaths,\u201d says trustee Gene Pranzo, who was the Alberts\u2019 lawyer. \u201cI\u2019m trying to guide [the trust] in a way that honors their names and their lives. They were very fine people, very generous, giving people who came from modest backgrounds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Florida couple had no previous ties to UConn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe American Cancer Society gave me a list of researchers who were working on bladder cancer, maybe nine or 10 people,\u201d Pranzo says. \u201cI studied their backgrounds, their publications, their positions, what they were doing in the field. Everything about Dr. Taylor was impressive. He has a very strong CV.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The institute\u2019s board of directors includes <a href=\"http:\/\/uconndocs.uchc.edu\/Home\/Physician?profileId=Clement-Jessica\">Dr. Jessica Clement<\/a>, UConn Health medical oncologist; Anne Diamond, chief executive of UConn Health\u2019s John Dempsey Hospital; and Dr. Carolyn Runowicz, American Cancer Society past president and former director of UConn Health\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/cancer.uchc.edu\/index.html\">Carole and Ray Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center<\/a>. Massachusetts health law attorney Jackie Canyon serves as the board\u2019s secretary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis donor could have chosen anyone in the country, and he chose John Taylor,\u201d Diamond says. \u201cThis distinction speaks volumes about Dr. Taylor\u2019s reputation nationally and even internationally, as well as the caliber of care and research here at UConn Health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Also serving on the institute\u2019s scientific advisory council is Dr. Ashish Kamat, professor, surgeon, and urologist at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.
