(Peter Morenus\/UConn Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The first honorees in a new employee recognition program, the <a href=\"http:\/\/spiritawards.uconn.edu\/\">UConn Spirit Awards<\/a>, received their awards at a ceremony March 4.<\/p>\n<p>The event marked the start of what is intended to be an annual tradition of recognizing the efforts of employees, especially staff; building community; and promoting civility.<\/p>\n<p>The Spirit Awards are the result of a survey conducted by the Something&#8217;s Happening Committee, which found a significant correlation between supportive interactions among colleagues and productivity on the job.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When our community is characterized by civility, mutual respect, and camaraderie, it creates an environment in which all of us do our jobs better,&#8221; said President Susan Herbst, who presented the awards. &#8220;That creates dividends not just here at UConn, but for the students we&#8217;re preparing to take their place in the world, and for all the people we interact with outside of campus.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This year&#8217;s winners were:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>Rising Star Award:<\/strong> Ashley Hazelton, Office of Community Outreach<br \/>\n<strong>Unsung Hero Award:<\/strong> Inda Watrous, Department of English<br \/>\n<strong>Team Award:<\/strong> CHIP administrative team:\u00a0Kelsey Barton-Henry,\u00a0Josh Hardin,\u00a0Lynne Hendrickson,\u00a0Susan Hoge, Beth Krane, Lisa McDevitt, Kathy Moriarty, Melissa Stone, Chris Tarricone, and AnnMarie White<br \/>\n<strong>Peer Award:<\/strong> Karen DeMeola, assistant dean of students at UConn Law<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_100820\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-100820\" style=\"width: 275px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/AshleyHazeltonSpirit150304a060.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-100820 img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/AshleyHazeltonSpirit150304a060.jpg\" alt=\"President Susan Herbst presents the rising star award to Ashley Hazelton during the 2015 UConn Spirit awards event held at the Student Union Ballroom on March 4, 2015.
