{"id":101359,"date":"2015-04-08T09:10:36","date_gmt":"2015-04-08T13:10:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=101359"},"modified":"2015-11-24T16:53:12","modified_gmt":"2015-11-24T21:53:12","slug":"students-device-helps-people-take-meds-as-prescribed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2015\/04\/students-device-helps-people-take-meds-as-prescribed\/","title":{"rendered":"Students\u2019 Device Helps People Take Meds as Prescribed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Steven Graf \u201915 (BUS) couldn\u2019t stop thinking about what he had seen in Ghana after a May 2013 trip there with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalbrigades.org\/\">Global Brigades<\/a>, a student organization that focuses on helping developing countries.<\/p>\n<p>The group, which included doctors, set up a health care clinic in a rural community. Many of the patients hadn\u2019t previously had access to health care, according to Graf.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone in the surrounding area came, free of charge. We\u2019d do the triage, they\u2019d get a prescription, then they\u2019d go to the pharmacy [at our clinic] to pick it up,\u201d he says. \u201cAt the end of the week, we went back to talk to everyone. According to the World Health Organization, 50 percent of patients in developed countries do not take medications as prescribed. Poor adherence leads to spikes in morbidity and death rates, and wastes hundreds of billions of dollars in health care costs.<\/p>\n<p>For about six months after his trip, Graf thought about how he could help people like those he met in Ghana. Finally, he had an idea. He teamed up with friend Charles Fayal \u201916 (ENG) to create <a href=\"http:\/\/parrotmd.org\/\">Parrot MD<\/a>, a simple recording device that allows physicians to record verbal instructions and send them home with patients.<\/p>\n<p>Graf and Fayal, a biomedical and electrical engineering major, worked with an advisor from the biomedical engineering department to create an independent study about their idea. They secured about $2,800 in funding from UConn\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/ugradresearch.uconn.edu\/\">Office of Undergraduate Research<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/ccei.business.uconn.edu\/\">Connecticut Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation<\/a> in the School of Business.<\/p>\n<p>The latest Parrot MD model, which costs about $2 per unit to make, consists of a small commercial recording device, like the kind found in a singing greeting card, and a 3D-printed case.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur main goal is to get the whole thing to under $1 cost-wise so we can give them out more loosely,\u201d Graf says. As quantities increase, bulk pricing for the recorders should help achieve that goal.<\/p>\n<p>And it looks like they\u2019ll be needing more units.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Feedback from the community<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In March, Fayal and Graf traveled to Guatemala with an organization called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pidonline.org\/\">Partners In Development<\/a> to meet with doctors, nurses, and other health care workers to gauge the need for something like Parrot MD.<\/p>\n<p>With a translator in tow, they met with doctors who worked with a more affluent population, as well as those who provided free health care to sugar cane farmers in an impoverished village.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe got some incredible feedback,\u201d Fayal says. \u201cThe doctors really liked the idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One Spanish-speaking doctor faced a language barrier with his indigenous patients, many of whom spoke Mayan languages, Graf says. The patients\u2019 translators could use the device to record instructions.<\/p>\n<p>They also learned that multiple prescriptions contributed to confusion among patients.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of these patients come in for multiple medications, whether it\u2019s because they have a few kids or they\u2019d get a cream, a suspension, and an antibiotic for themselves.
