The University of Connecticut announced today that $202 million has been raised through its development campaign called Our University. Our Moment<\/a>.<\/em>, putting the University one-third of the way toward reaching the $600 million goal.<\/p>\n

The fund raising includes $143 million for programs, $32.4 million for students, $13.7 million for faculty, and $13.2 million for capital projects. So far, $57 million has been raised toward the endowment.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re happy with the promising start of the campaign and the momentum we\u2019re building,\u201d said University President Michael Hogan. \u201cWith the support we\u2019ve raised for students, faculty, and programs, we\u2019re also making progress toward building the endowment, which is vital to UConn\u2019s future.\u201d<\/p>\n

UConn has received a number of million-dollar gifts, including $1.15 million from Gary Gladstein \u201966 and \u201908 (honorary) for the Human Rights Institute, $1 million from Robert \u201968 and Carlotta \u201968 Holster<\/a> to fund an endowment for the Honors Program, and a planned estate gift estimated at $1 million from Edward \u201958 \u201963 and Judith \u201965 Stentaford<\/a> for an unrestricted fund at the School of Fine Arts.<\/p>\n

Campaign Chairman Denis M. McCarthy \u201964 \u201965 reports a positive outlook for this fiscal year and beyond.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re cautiously optimistic about the coming year and more optimistic about the remainder of the campaign over the next four years\u201d said McCarthy. \u201cDonors are excited about the campaign, and they\u2019re telling us that they\u2019re feeling increasingly confident about the country\u2019s economy as well as their own financial situations. We, like all institutions, are feeling the effects of the recession, with state budget cuts and a decline in our endowment value, but we\u2019re starting to see some positive indicators.\u201d<\/p>\n

McCarthy added that the campaign is helping engage more alumni with the University.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur message is resonating with alumni who understand how important private support is, especially today, and that this is our moment to really take UConn to the next level,\u201d said McCarthy. \u201cOur friends and the business community are excited and getting more involved as well, because they understand the critical role UConn plays in educating our workforce and driving the state\u2019s economy.\u201d<\/p>\n
