{"id":104486,"date":"2015-09-14T12:48:28","date_gmt":"2015-09-14T16:48:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=104486"},"modified":"2016-07-19T14:04:15","modified_gmt":"2016-07-19T18:04:15","slug":"topping-out-uconns-newest-residence-hall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2015\/09\/topping-out-uconns-newest-residence-hall\/","title":{"rendered":"Topping-out UConn&#8217;s Newest Residence Hall"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A milestone in the construction of UConn\u2019s newest residence hall was marked on Monday with a topping-out ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>As the first project begun under the auspices of the Next Generation Connecticut initiative, the event signified a milestone for the state as well. Known as the STEM Residence Hall for planning purposes, the building will be called &#8220;NextGen Hall&#8221; when it opens.<\/p>\n<p>The $79 million, 210,000 square-foot building is being constructed according to LEED silver certification standards, and is slated for completion by summer 2016. Plans for the residence hall include creation of a new learning community for students pursuing majors in the disciplines of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnywhere you go in higher education, you\u2019re likely to hear people talking about those so-called \u2018STEM\u2019 disciplines,\u201d said University President Susan Herbst. \u201cThis project is proof that at UConn, we\u2019re doing more than just talking.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_104496\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-104496\" style=\"width: 615px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/STEM150914a041.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-104496 img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/STEM150914a041.jpg\" alt=\"President Susan Herbst speaks during the topping off ceremony for the STEM residence hall on Sept. 14, 2015. (Peter Morenus\/UConn Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Topping-out, or &#8216;topping-off,&#8217; is a <span class=\"_Tgc\">builders&#8217; tradition held when the last beam is put in place during construction.<\/span> In the week leading up to the event, all project subcontractors were invited to sign the building\u2019s last two precast planks. (Peter Morenus\/UConn Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The final two planks were hoisted together with an American flag to symbolize pride and and a live potted tree as a metaphor for the building coming to life. Traditionally an evergreen, the tree selected for this occasion was an oak \u2013 a nod to the state tree, which is also represented in the University\u2019s seal containing an oak leaf.
