{"id":10632,"date":"2010-02-25T13:19:41","date_gmt":"2010-02-25T17:19:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=10632"},"modified":"2011-05-31T12:37:58","modified_gmt":"2011-05-31T16:37:58","slug":"uconn-avery-point-to-host-national-reading-event-for-kids","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2010\/02\/uconn-avery-point-to-host-national-reading-event-for-kids\/","title":{"rendered":"UConn Avery Point to Host National Reading Event for Kids"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The University of Connecticut&#8217;s Avery Point Campus will host groups of preschool children for a day of reading and getting to know ocean life in observance of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nea.org\/readacross\">Read Across America Day<\/a> on March 2.<\/p>\n<p>Eighty children aged three to five will convene at UConn\u2019s Avery Point Campus in Groton to listen to readings of such classic books as Dr. Seuss\u2019s <em>Green Eggs and Ham<\/em> and <em>One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish.<\/em> The readers will include Avery Point faculty, staff, and students; Groton City Mayor Dennis Popp and Groton Town Mayor Jim Streeter; UConn student <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timplungis.com\/\">Tim Plungis<\/a>, a Republican candidate for Connecticut\u2019s House of Representatives; and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.merrickforachange.com\/\">Merrick Alpert<\/a>, a Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis Read Across America event will help young children not only to get excited about reading, but to learn through reading and hands-on activities about one of our greatest resources: the ocean,\u201d says Helen Rozwadowski, interim director of the Avery Point Campus.<\/p>\n<p>In keeping with the campus\u2019s marine and maritime educational mission, the event will include a reading of <em>The Magic School Bus: On the Ocean Floor<\/em> by Joanna Cole. The children will also view and touch marine animals in a saltwater touch tank, and color pictures of fish.<\/p>\n<p>Read Across America is an initiative of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nea.org\/readacross\">National Education Association<\/a> that promotes reading motivation and awareness.
