{"id":108423,"date":"2016-01-19T15:33:49","date_gmt":"2016-01-19T20:33:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?post_type=school-college-post&#038;p=108423"},"modified":"2016-01-19T16:14:01","modified_gmt":"2016-01-19T21:14:01","slug":"v-foundation-backs-unprecedented-cancer-vaccine-trial-at-uconn-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2016\/01\/v-foundation-backs-unprecedented-cancer-vaccine-trial-at-uconn-health\/","title":{"rendered":"V Foundation Backs Unprecedented Cancer Vaccine Trial at UConn Health"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>UConn Health this year is starting a <a href=\"http:\/\/cancer.uchc.edu\/research\/index.html\">clinical trial<\/a> of a vaccine designed to fight ovarian cancer using the patient\u2019s own tumor.<\/p>\n<p>The V Foundation for Cancer Research is helping make it possible with a $50,000 grant to Drs. <a href=\"http:\/\/facultydirectory.uchc.edu\/profile?profileId=Kueck-Angela\">Angela Kueck<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/facultydirectory.uchc.edu\/profile?profileId=Srivastava-Pramod\">Pramod Srivastava<\/a>, who say this will be the first such trial anywhere in the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am so honored to receive this award from such an inspirational organization as The V Foundation for Cancer Research that has done so much to support cancer research and improving the lives of people with cancer,\u201d says Kueck, a gynecologic oncologist and UConn Health\u2019s medical director of robotic surgery.<\/p>\n<p>Srivastava, director of UConn Health\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/cancer.uchc.edu\/\">Carole and Ray Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center<\/a>, has made a career of advancing cancer immunotherapy, and recently was <a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=107299\">elected a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors<\/a>. His work has led to a method to identify protein mutations in cancer cells, enabling the creation of a vaccine derived from the patient\u2019s tumor and administered to trigger the immune system to attack the tumor.<\/p>\n<p>The study is scheduled to open to its first ovarian cancer patients next month, with the hope of enrolling 15 patients in the next two years. Patient follow-up would continue for five years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur hope is to eventually expand our clinical trial to patients with other types of cancer,\u201d Kueck says.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The V Foundation for Cancer Research has awarded a $50,000 grant to Drs.
