{"id":110523,"date":"2016-03-18T08:19:50","date_gmt":"2016-03-18T12:19:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?post_type=school-college-post&#038;p=110523"},"modified":"2017-01-26T11:15:17","modified_gmt":"2017-01-26T16:15:17","slug":"uconn-health-announces-its-2016-nightingale-nurses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2016\/03\/uconn-health-announces-its-2016-nightingale-nurses\/","title":{"rendered":"UConn Health Announces Its 2016 Nightingale Nurses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>UConn Health has announced the 10 nurses who will be presented with Nightingale Awards for Excellence in Nursing later this year:<\/p>\n<p><strong>JoAnne Donaldson Blythe<\/strong>, Procedures Center<\/p>\n<p><strong>From Her Nomination:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cJoanne is unique in the way she gives herself to others, and comforts them through difficult circumstances.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cIn addition to Joanne\u2019s superb commitment to her patients\u2019 safety, her selflessness, caring nature, and ethics clearly demonstrate her passion. Her philosophy, \u2018the patient comes first,\u2019 is always apparent by her actions. Joanne upholds the highest standards within her profession.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Frank Faccin<\/strong>, Garner Correctional Institution<\/p>\n<p><strong>From His Nominations:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cFrank Faccin, LPN, has been the \u2018go-to\u2019 staff member at the Department of Correction facility housing the most seriously mentally ill inmates. Despite being \u2018only an LPN,\u2019 his nursing and physician peers rely on his over 20 years of knowledge and judgement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cHe sustained a significant injury during an inmate assault, yet returned to work with the same positive attitude he always displayed. The CDOC awarded him the Distinguished Service Medal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lisa Gentile<\/strong>, Outpatient Infectious Diseases and Travel Clinic<\/p>\n<p><strong>From Her Nomination:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cBecause of Lisa we have cured more than 97 percent of our [hepatitis C] patients.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cLisa is that employee that every manager wants working for them; that every doctor wants as their nurse; and every MA wants as their counterpart. And the reason is: She makes us all look good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Keisha Johnson<\/strong>, Osborn Correctional Institution<\/p>\n<p><strong>From Her Nomination:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cAt any given time, she oversees the care of 45 to 50 HIV-positive inmates and oversees inmates who are in active hepatitis C treatment. She is extremely well organized, caring, and understanding in her role of ID Nurse Case Manager.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cKeisha in July of 2015 took time out of her busy schedule to create an HIV\/AIDS awareness production. This production highlights the hidden talents of many inmates. The invited inmates\/staffs were able to be educated on HIV\/AIDS myths and facts. Her production resulted in many inmates who were afraid to know their HIV status now requesting to be screened for the HIV virus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Arlene Morin<\/strong>, Clinical Nurse Specialist, John Dempsey Hospital<\/p>\n<p><strong>From Her Nominations:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cArlene Does consults for inpatients and outpatients in the clinic that include teaching, support and hands-on of how and what to expect\u2026 Arlene always looks out for the patient\u2019s best interest when it comes to their health and healing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cMy nursing career has been personally touched by Arlene and in turn, Arlene is able to touch the lives of all patients I care for. Thank you Arlene for giving me the world\u2019s best example of what it means to be a Nightingale Nurse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lynne Neff<\/strong><br \/>\nCorrectional Managed Health Care Transitional Services Manager<\/p>\n<p><strong>From Her Nomination:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cCollaborating closely with others, Lynne has strived to ensure continuity of care and a more successful return to society for many. When the prognosis of releasing patients is poor, Lynne has creatively arranged hospice services at the patient\u2019s home when family support has been stable, or successfully explored other options.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cBy her work, Lynne has demonstrated advocacy in caring for a diverse, underserved, and disenfranchised population that is more often than not forgotten by the public.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Anne Niziolek<\/strong>, Nurse Manager, Medicine 4<\/p>\n<p><strong>From Her Nominations:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cAnne is deserving of the Nightingale Award because of the impact that she has had on patient care, her willingness to always go beyond the call of duty, and the excellence that she demonstrates in her leadership role.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cAnne seizes every opportunity to make improvements in daily nursing practice, recognizing that this helps patients as well as caregivers&#8230; We are truly fortunate to have such a selfless and caring nurse and leader.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dawn Smith<\/strong>, Calhoun Cardiology Center<\/p>\n<p><strong>From Her Nomination:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cDawn is simply an excellent nurse with the personality that exemplifies the strong qualities that the nursing profession was built on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cDawn is a model of the type of service UConn must provide to succeed. My patient\u2019s daughter has told several friends to come to UConn for their care. This would not happen without Dawn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jennifer Sposito<\/strong>, Clincal Patient Navigator, Cardiac Unit<\/p>\n<p><strong>From Her Nomination:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cGenerally speaking it takes years for a stroke coordinator to create a stroke program. Jennifer\u2019s drive, passion, and tireless work helped reach this goal within a short five months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The work Jennifer has done to improve stroke care shows that our organization is exceeding the expectation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Timothy Tralli<\/strong>, Correctional Head Nurse, Hartford Correctional Center<\/p>\n<p><strong>From His Nomination:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cTo ensure a proper \u2018Code White\u2019 response he helped initiate a training program for correctional officers on his shift\u2026 This program was the result of months of interaction and cooperation with the Warden and his staff, and currently is the only one in existence in the state. Our Codes are now a mix of the efforts of both medical and custody and are a testament to his enthusiasm and forward thinking when confronted with a problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cHis skills, knowledge and abilities as a nurse educator are second to none.
