{"id":112806,"date":"2016-05-17T09:20:51","date_gmt":"2016-05-17T13:20:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=112806"},"modified":"2016-05-18T09:39:04","modified_gmt":"2016-05-18T13:39:04","slug":"hospital-patients-move-new-tower","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2016\/05\/hospital-patients-move-new-tower\/","title":{"rendered":"Hospital Patients Move into New Tower"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe title=\"UConn Health Moves 70 Patients Into New Hospital Tower\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zhl-W1lpY5w?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>After three years of building involving more than 5,000 construction jobs, move-in day arrived at the new UConn John Dempsey Hospital tower Friday morning.<\/p>\n<p>It started at 5:15 a.m. with the opening of the new Emergency Department, and an hour later the ED\u2019s first patient arrived.<\/p>\n<p>Meantime, a carefully orchestrated plan to safely move 70 inpatients from the existing hospital tower to the new tower was underway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we continue at this pace, we\u2019ll be done before 1 o\u2019clock,\u201d said hospital CEO Anne Diamond at about 7:45 a.m.<\/p>\n<p>She was right. (Janine Gelineau\/UConn Health Photo)<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThis facility is beautiful,\u201d said nurse Sarah Higley, who previously worked on Surgery 7 in the old tower, now works on the fifth floor in the new tower. \u201cThe floor is brand new, all the rooms are private, all of the equipment that we have is brand new. Things are going to work a lot better. I was on Surgery 7 for a long time \u2013 I worked there as a student, as an aide, and as a nurse \u2013 so I\u2019m very familiar with that floor, that floor was my home. And I\u2019m very excited to call this floor my new home.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n  <p>How could we not feel better in a place like this? <cite> &#8212 UConn John Dempsey Hospital patient<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>One of the first patients moved to Higley\u2019s floor was Dr. Michael P. Kruger, a graduate of UConn\u2019s orthopedic residency program in the mid-80s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the time, the hospital was state-of-the-art, and I was well aware of the capabilities of it and the niceties of it,\u201d Kruger said. \u201cBut now, moving into this facility, going from semi-private to private rooms, it\u2019s a big change.
