{"id":114061,"date":"2016-06-29T10:37:56","date_gmt":"2016-06-29T14:37:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=114061"},"modified":"2016-08-17T11:51:09","modified_gmt":"2016-08-17T15:51:09","slug":"uconn-revokes-bill-cosbys-honorary-degree","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2016\/06\/uconn-revokes-bill-cosbys-honorary-degree\/","title":{"rendered":"UConn Revokes Bill Cosby\u2019s Honorary Degree"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At its meeting on June 29, the Board of Trustees voted to revoke the Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree conferred upon comedian Bill Cosby two decades ago.<\/p>\n<p>The vote referenced conduct that Cosby admitted to in sworn depositions. According to the Board&#8217;s by-laws, honorary degrees are conferred upon individuals who represent the \u201chighest intellectual and moral values; [the award] should reflect the very character and quality of the University itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cosby received the honorary degree on May 18, 1996. In recent years, dozens of women have accused the comedian of sexual misconduct.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe University would not have awarded an honorary degree to Mr. Cosby if the full breadth of his past actions were known at the time,\u201d the Board of Trustees noted.<\/p>\n<p>Wednesday\u2019s vote followed two other unanimous decisions seeking such action, made by University organizations representing students, and faculty and staff.
