As the 130th\u00a0active chapter,\u00a0UConn joins medical schools\u00a0throughout the United States who recognize and promote the highest ideals of\u00a0medicine.<\/p>\n<p>A\u03a9A\u2019s Board of Directors voted to add the A\u03a9A Beta chapter\u00a0at UConn. This is only the second chapter to be established in the state since\u00a0Yale School of Medicine\u2019s Alpha chapter was founded in 1920.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are honored at UConn School of Medicine to be selected\u00a0as the Beta Chapter of the historic Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society,\u201d\u00a0said Dr. Bruce T. Liang, dean of UConn School of Medicine. \u201cWe look forward to\u00a0our medical students becoming active members of such a\u00a0prestigious society with\u00a0a long legacy of promoting excellence and scholarship in our profession of\u00a0medicine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As an active A\u03a9A chapter, UConn School of Medicine can nominate\u00a0the top 25 percent of its medical school class to become members of the\u00a0professional medical organization within their senior year. Of that 25 percent,\u00a0up to 16 percent of the total medical school class may be\u00a0elected into the\u00a0society. New members will be selected for their demonstration of continued\u00a0scholarship, high professionalism, servant\u00a0leadership, gifted teaching and\u00a0service to the community.<\/p>\n<p>The chapter may also elect distinguished faculty and alumni\u00a0from UConn\u2019s medical school, and elect residents and fellows.<\/p>\n<p>Alpha Omega Alpha was founded in 1902 by a small group of\u00a0medical students led by William Webster Root at the College of Physicians\u00a0and\u00a0Surgeons in Chicago.
