{"id":116420,"date":"2016-09-01T15:27:01","date_gmt":"2016-09-01T19:27:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?post_type=school-college-post&#038;p=116420"},"modified":"2016-09-01T15:27:41","modified_gmt":"2016-09-01T19:27:41","slug":"neag-school-faculty-awarded-2m-ies-grants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2016\/09\/neag-school-faculty-awarded-2m-ies-grants\/","title":{"rendered":"Neag School Faculty Awarded More Than $2M in IES Grants"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry-content clearfix subpage\">\n<div class=\"single-content-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"single-content\">\n<p>Two Neag School faculty members in the Department of Educational Leadership have\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ies.ed.gov\/ncer\/projects\/16awards.asp\">recently received funding<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 totaling more than $2 million \u2014\u00a0from the U.S. Department of Education\u2019s Institute of Education Sciences (IES), as part of the latest round of grants issued by the National Center for Education Research (NCER)\u2019s Education Research Grants Program.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Evaluation of School Principals\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Morgaen Donaldson, associate professor of educational leadership and director of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/cepa.uconn.edu\/\">Center for Education Policy Analysis<\/a>\u00a0(CEPA) at the Neag School, was awarded a three-year, $1.4 million grant for a project titled \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/ies.ed.gov\/funding\/grantsearch\/details.asp?ID=1872\">District Policies Related to Principal Evaluation, Learning-Centered Leadership, and Student Achievement<\/a>.\u201d Donaldson\u2019s co-principal investigators include assistant professor Shaun Dougherty of the Neag School, as well as Peter Youngs of the University of Virginia and Madeline Mavrogordato of Michigan State University.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the past five years, the great majority of states have approved legislation mandating that public school principals be evaluated annually using formulas that incorporate students\u2019 academic growth,\u201d state the researchers. \u201cHowever, scant research examines how school district policies are related to leadership practices that are associated with improved student outcomes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The project aims to study 25 school districts in Connecticut, Michigan, and North Carolina, exploring associations between school district policies related to principal evaluation, principals\u2019 enactment of learning-centered leadership practices, and student reading and mathematics achievement. This project was the only education leadership grant funded by NCER in the 2016 competition.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Examining Career Technical Education<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dougherty also was awarded a four-year, $695,000 grant for a project titled \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/ies.ed.gov\/funding\/grantsearch\/details.asp?ID=1874\">The Causal Impact of Attending a Career-Technical High School on Student Achievement, High School Graduation, and College Enrollment<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The research team \u2014\u00a0which includes Dougherty\u2019s co-principal investigators and UConn colleagues Eric J. Brunner, associate professor of economics, and Stephen L. Ross, professor of economics \u2014 will focus on examining the impact of attending a CTE high school \u2014\u00a0in which all students who enroll participate in some form or career or technical educational training \u2014\u00a0on students\u2019 achievement, high school graduation, and college enrollment. The project involves a partnership with the Connecticut State Department of Education and will use data from the Connecticut Technical High School System.
