{"id":116515,"date":"2016-09-06T10:40:15","date_gmt":"2016-09-06T14:40:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=116515"},"modified":"2023-06-27T12:19:39","modified_gmt":"2023-06-27T16:19:39","slug":"uconn-sierra-club-cool-schools-top-10","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2016\/09\/uconn-sierra-club-cool-schools-top-10\/","title":{"rendered":"UConn in Sierra Club &#8216;Cool Schools&#8217; Top 10 \u2013 Again"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">For the fifth time in as many years, the University of Connecticut is among the top 10 schools in the <a href=\"http:\/\/sierraclub.org\/sierra\/2016-5-september-october\/cool-schools-2016\/full-ranking\">Sierra Club\u2019s \u201cCool Schools\u201d ranking<\/a>. UConn placed ninth on the list this year, and was one of only a few Carnegie Level One Research Institutions still in the top 10. A change in survey methodology knocked previously high-ranking schools lower down the list, and put smaller liberal arts colleges and schools with specialized environmental programs into the top spots.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">\u00a0The Sierra Club, which is the largest grassroots environmental organization in the United States, bases the school rankings on sustainability data collected in a range of areas, including energy, investments, academics, waste reduction and diversion, transportation, and purchasing. The raw data for scoring comes from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aashe.org\/\">Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education<\/a>\u2019s (AASHE) STARS self-reporting tool. Only UConn and one other school \u2013 The University of California, Irvine \u2013 have managed to stay in the top 10 for five years in a row.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">\u201cWhat we are most proud of is that we continue to be in the top 10 and are one of only two in the nation to do that for five years,\u201d says Rich Miller, director of UConn\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/ecohusky.uconn.edu\/\">Office of Environmental Policy<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s a tribute to the number of students, faculty, staff, and administrators at UConn who care about a wide range of environmental\u00a0\u00a0programs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">The scoring methodology was updated to reflect trends in campus sustainability, instead of rewarding schools for conducting audits and surveys of their sustainability operations, as in years past. In the 10 years since the survey was launched, higher education has come a long way in terms of incorporating sustainability values, says Jason Mark, editor-in-chief of <i>Sierra <\/i>magazine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">\u201cAt this point, it\u2019s no longer sufficient for schools to simply survey their operations and curricula,\u201d he says. \u201cWe, along with our 2.4 million members, are expecting measurable progress.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_116553\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-116553\" style=\"width: 450px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Putnam-003.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-116553 img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Putnam-003-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"The newly renovated Putnam Refectory dining hall includes an area for growing fresh herbs. (PAES\/UConn Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">One area of progress for UConn this year was food and dining, which grew from 28 percent local and community-sourced food last year to 35 percent this year \u2013 an increase of seven percent. \u00a0Since last year\u2019s survey, three more dining halls have achieved <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dinegreen.com\/\">Green Restaurant certification<\/a>, Miller says. Five of the eight dining halls on campus now have that designation, some of which\u00a0are equipped with specialized kitchen equipment that reduces food waste volume by 80 percent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">UConn also scored well on the water, waste, academics, innovation, planning, and purchasing sections of the survey,\u00a0and has been cited for its exemplary Vendor Code of Conduct, which sets preferential sustainability standards for any company seeking to do business with the University.\u00a0Initiatives contributing to the strong showing include UConn\u2019s reclaimed water facility, which recycles wastewater for use at the central utility plant,<b> <\/b>its<b>\u00a0<\/b>recently <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecohusky.uconn.edu\/docs\/climate\/CAP%20Report%202015.pdf\">updated Climate Action Plan<\/a>, mattress recycling, and agricultural waste<b> <\/b>composting programs.
