{"id":118223,"date":"2016-11-03T09:16:46","date_gmt":"2016-11-03T13:16:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=118223"},"modified":"2016-11-04T11:08:12","modified_gmt":"2016-11-04T15:08:12","slug":"study-short-sighted-planning-costs-companies-money","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2016\/11\/study-short-sighted-planning-costs-companies-money\/","title":{"rendered":"Study: Short-Sighted Planning Costs Companies Money"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When executives are committed to the long-term viability of their corporation, and invest money in future growth and technology that will not pay off right away, does that give the company a strong competitive advantage?<\/p>\n<p>For years conventional wisdom said yes, even as many companies seemed focused on short-term results instead. New research by UConn management professors David Souder and Greg Reilly and their colleagues offers evidence that longer payoff horizons are indeed more profitable.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers looked at equipment purchases made by 2,342 manufacturing companies since the early 1990s. They selected manufacturing firms because they invest in equipment and have to amortize it. That enabled the researchers to know how many years into the future the managers were investing in the business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe suspected companies were leaving profits on the table that could be theirs if they would opt for more durable, longer-lasting equipment,\u201d Souder says.<\/p>\n<p>Adds Reilly, \u201cYou might have to wait a few years, but the data provide hard evidence that it pays off for companies to be long-term oriented.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The research also broke new ground by establishing limits on the benefit of long-term investing. Companies with very long horizons already have little to gain from planning even further into the future. A small number of companies in the study \u2013 less than 1 percent\u00a0\u2013 could even be described as \u201ctoo long-term.\u201d\u00a0But this pales in comparison to the 55 percent of manufacturing businesses that averaged much lower profits associated with short-sighted investment policies.<\/p>\n<p>Their findings in \u201cA Behavioral Understanding of Investment Horizon and Firm Performance,\u2019\u2019 which is pending publication in <em>Organization<\/em> <em>Science<\/em>, resulted from collaboration with Philip Bromiley of the University of California at Irvine and Scott Mitchell of the University of Kansas.<\/p>\n<p>There isn\u2019t a one-size-fits-all approach to investing in the company\u2019s future, say the authors. In fact, it differs from industry to industry. \u201cOur work suggests companies have an opportunity to figure out where they are compared to their peer group,\u2019\u2019 Reilly says. \u201cIn our analysis, about 44 percent of companies were in the right ballpark, but others have the opportunity to increase profits.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The study only analyzed businesses in the U.S. \u201cAlthough short-termism is seen throughout the world, it is especially associated with American companies,\u2019\u2019 says Souder.<\/p>\n<p>While the researchers focused on investment in equipment, Reilly says he believes that corporate investment extends to other initiatives, including research and development, supply chain infrastructure, and employee training.<\/p>\n<p>Souder, who worked as a consultant prior to his academic career, says managers often want to embrace a long-term plan but are constrained by investors and demands for short-term profit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not easy to focus on the future. It takes discipline, and it can be tough to convince stakeholders that it is the right thing to do,\u2019\u2019 he says. \u201cBut the companies that do adhere to it are seeing good returns.
