It has to do with circadian rhythms, which are controlled by light exposure.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_119289\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-119289\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-119289 img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Winokur.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Andrew Winokur, professor of psychiatry, UConn School of Medicine (Photo by Janine Gelineau)\" width=\"160\" height=\"208\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 160px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 160\/208;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-119289\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Andrew Winokur, professor of psychiatry, UConn School of Medicine (Photo by Janine Gelineau)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not unusual for any or all of us to have a little trouble dealing with the time change,\u201d says Dr. Andrew Winokur from the UConn Health Department of Psychiatry. \u201cBut when it triggers things like depression, sluggishness, sleeplessness, fatigue, and food cravings, the signs point to seasonal affective disorder, or SAD.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though not curable, treatment options for SAD include light therapy, psychotherapy and drug therapy. Winokur also has some recommendations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Increasing exposure to light.<\/li>\n<li>Focusing on positive thoughts.<\/li>\n<li>Exercising (outdoor exercise is more beneficial).<\/li>\n<li>Reducing sugar and carbohydrate consumption.<\/li>\n<li>Maintaining regular sleep habits and not oversleeping.<\/li>\n<li>Maintaining usual levels of social activity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;If symptoms persist or become severe or disabling, it is advisable to consult with your primary care provider or with a mental health professional,\u201d Winokur says.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The return to standard time comes with more than just an extra hour of sleep that first weekend.
