{"id":120028,"date":"2016-12-09T10:19:34","date_gmt":"2016-12-09T15:19:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=120028"},"modified":"2023-06-27T13:08:56","modified_gmt":"2023-06-27T17:08:56","slug":"the-voice-of-womens-ice-hockey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2016\/12\/the-voice-of-womens-ice-hockey\/","title":{"rendered":"The Voice of Women&#8217;s Ice Hockey"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum on this November night, Kailey Townsend is in position and ready for the puck to drop on her first women\u2019s ice hockey match.<\/p>\n<p>Seated at an elevated table above the bleachers that overlooks the ice, Townsend is prepared. She knows the names of all the UConn players and their numbers.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n  <p>People can\u2019t see what you\u2019re looking at, so you have to be the eyes for their ears. <cite> &#8212 Kailey Townsend '18 (CLAS)<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Townsend &#8217;18 (CLAS), a communication and political science major from New York, is the newest play-by-play commentator for the UConn Women\u2019s Ice Hockey team. And this season is the first time commentary will accompany the live stream on the UConn Athletics website.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTonight\u2019s game is my training,\u201d she says, \u201cThis season is the preliminary, and from here I\u2019ll keep going.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The best commentators often become the voice of a team. Vin Scully \u2013 the famous commentator for the L.A. Someone slips her a list of season statistics to add to the details that she can provide her listeners.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need to know how to be more descriptive in the moment,\u201d says Townsend. \u201cPeople can\u2019t see what you\u2019re looking at, so you have to be the eyes for their ears.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She is consulting her cheat sheets before the game begins, reading a name and number on the list and looking up to match them to each woman practicing on the ice. She records the names and numbers of the visiting team, too, as each of their players skates by.<\/p>\n<p>Even though Division I sports like basketball and football tend to cultivate the largest fan bases, Townsend feels strongly that this is the sport she wants to be covering. \u201cIt\u2019s the empowerment,&#8221; she says. &#8220;In such a masculine sport, it\u2019s awesome to support women\u2019s part in it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Once the clock starts running, Townsend pops on her headgear and jumps right in to the commentary, effortlessly maneuvering between watching the puck and consulting her cheat sheets, never missing a moment of action or fumbling over her words.<\/p>\n<p>The noise of the stadium completely washes out Townsend\u2019s voice. Someone sitting next to her would have difficulty making out what she says.
