{"id":121402,"date":"2017-01-26T10:02:38","date_gmt":"2017-01-26T15:02:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=121402"},"modified":"2017-02-02T10:07:20","modified_gmt":"2017-02-02T15:07:20","slug":"uconn-go-red-women-heart-health-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2017\/01\/uconn-go-red-women-heart-health-month\/","title":{"rendered":"UConn to Go Red for Women&#8217;s Health During Heart Health Month"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>UConn Health\u2019s Pat and Jim Calhoun Cardiology Center and the American Heart Association are calling on members of UConn Nation to wear a piece of red clothing on Friday, Feb. 3, <a href=\"http:\/\/honor.americanheart.org\/site\/TR?fr_id=5042&amp;pg=entry\">National Wear Red Day<\/a>, to help raise greater awareness about the importance of preventing heart disease and stroke in women.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t forget to share on social media how you chose to Go Red for Women with UConn and UConn Health, with a photo using the hashtag #GoRedCT.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, donations are welcome to <a href=\"http:\/\/honor.americanheart.org\/site\/TR\/GRFW\/NAT-GRFWWearRedDay?team_id=285619&amp;pg=team&amp;fr_id=5042\">UConn\u2019s Team<\/a> to further support the American Heart Association\u2019s mission of increasing awareness and scientific research to improve cardiovascular health among women.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More about Women\u2019s Heart Health<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cardiovascular diseases, such as heart disease, heart attack, and stroke, are the number one killer of American women: these diseases take a woman\u2019s life every 80 seconds in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>Yet the majority of cardiovascular diseases that develop are preventable, with the practice of a healthy lifestyle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWomen, young and old, must stay vigilant and take action each and every day to prevent development of cardiovascular disease or having a heart attack or stroke event in their lifetime and to maintain their overall health,\u201d says Dr. Joyce Meng, cardiologist at the Calhoun Cardiology Center of UConn Health.<\/p>\n<p>Experts at the Calhoun Cardiology Center share the following cardiovascular health awareness information with women:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Three steps to prevent heart disease: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Eat a heart-healthy diet, high in colorful fruits and vegetables and low in sugar, salt, saturated fat, and fried foods.<\/li>\n<li>Exercise daily, at least 30 minutes a day at moderate intensity.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid tobacco smoke, which leads to narrow and hardened arteries and a higher risk of heart attack and stroke.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Six modifiable risk factors of cardiovascular diseases to control:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>High cholesterol<\/li>\n<li>Diabetes<\/li>\n<li>Obesity<\/li>\n<li>High blood pressure<\/li>\n<li>Lack of exercise<\/li>\n<li>Cigarette smoking<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Female heart attack warning signs:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Unusual chest pain, pressure, or discomfort<\/li>\n<li>Shortness of breath<\/li>\n<li>Abdominal discomfort<\/li>\n<li>Heartburn<\/li>\n<li>Jaw, neck, arm, or shoulder pain<\/li>\n<li>Fatigue<\/li>\n<li>Dizziness and nausea<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Warning signs of a stroke:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Numbness or weakness of face, arm, and\/or leg<\/li>\n<li>Facial droop<\/li>\n<li>Acute vision changes<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty in speaking<\/li>\n<li>Trouble understanding simple statements<\/li>\n<li>Confusion<\/li>\n<li>Trouble walking or maintaining balance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cMost importantly, if you think you are having symptoms related to a heart attack or stroke, don\u2019t hesitate to call 9-1-1 right away.
