{"id":125849,"date":"2017-05-15T06:09:20","date_gmt":"2017-05-15T10:09:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=125849"},"modified":"2023-06-27T12:19:05","modified_gmt":"2023-06-27T16:19:05","slug":"ticking-biological-clock-migratory-birds-arriving-late-breeding-grounds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2017\/05\/ticking-biological-clock-migratory-birds-arriving-late-breeding-grounds\/","title":{"rendered":"Ticking Biological Clock: Migratory Birds Arriving Late to Breeding Grounds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New research shows climate change is altering the delicate seasonal clock that North American migratory songbirds rely on to successfully mate and raise healthy offspring, setting in motion a domino effect that could threaten the survival of many familiar backyard bird species.<\/p>\n<p>A growing shift in the onset of spring has left nine of 48 species of songbirds studied unable to reach their northern breeding grounds at the calendar marks critical for producing the next generation of fledglings, according to a paper published today in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-017-02045-z\">Nature\u00a0Scientific Reports<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s because in many regions, warming temperatures are triggering plants to begin their growth earlier or later than normal, skewing biological cycles that have long been in sync.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe birds are trying to keep up with the speed of climate change but they can\u2019t \u2026 it\u2019s just too fast,\u201d says Morgan Tingley, assistant professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of Connecticut, and a study author. \u201cThey can\u2019t adapt quickly enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_126010\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-126010\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-126010 size-medium img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Passerina-cyanea_Indigo-Bunting_936.2-\u00a9Spyreas-300x221.jpg\" alt=\"Indigo Bunting \u00a9Greg Spyreas\" width=\"300\" height=\"221\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Passerina-cyanea_Indigo-Bunting_936.2-\u00a9Spyreas-300x221.jpg 300w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Passerina-cyanea_Indigo-Bunting_936.2-\u00a9Spyreas-768x565.jpg 768w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Passerina-cyanea_Indigo-Bunting_936.2-\u00a9Spyreas-1024x753.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Passerina-cyanea_Indigo-Bunting_936.2-\u00a9Spyreas-571x420.jpg 571w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Passerina-cyanea_Indigo-Bunting_936.2-\u00a9Spyreas.jpg 1524w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/221;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-126010\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Indigo Bunting \u00a9Greg Spyreas<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The multi-institutional study used data from satellites and citizen scientists to study how quickly the interval between spring plant growth and the arrival of 48 songbird species across North America changed from 2001 to 2012.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers found the gap lengthened by over half a day per year across all species on average, a rate of five days per decade \u2013 but for some species, the mismatch is growing at double or triple that rate.<\/p>\n<p>Nine species were clearly unable to keep up with the shift: great crested flycatchers, indigo buntings, scarlet tanagers, rose-breasted grosbeaks, eastern wood pewees, yellow-billed cuckoos, northern parulas, blue-winged warblers, and Townsend\u2019s warblers.<\/p>\n<p>The study is the first to investigate the increasing mismatch between songbirds\u2019 springtime arrival and plant growth at the continental scale and across dozens of species, the researchers say.<\/p>\n<p>Previous studies have predicted climate change will drive hundreds of bird species to extinction, and greatly reduce the ranges of others. Birds that breed primarily in eastern temperate forests tended to lag behind, while species that breed in western forests reached breeding grounds too early.<\/p>\n<p>The rate of change is concerning, given that climate change is predicted to accelerate, which could mean timing will be more out of sync in the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow quickly we can adapt and whether and how much of the natural world, including ourselves, lags behind where we should be in response to climate change is really one of the key challenges,\u201d says Tingley.<\/p>\n<p>The increased variability in weather conditions that comes with climate change could also compound birds\u2019 difficulties in tracking year-to-year changes.<\/p>\n<p>A resource that enabled the study\u2019s broad-scale investigation of nearly 50 bird species across North America are the tens of thousands of data points contributed by citizen scientists, the researchers said. The so called \u201ccitizen scientists\u201d are mainly amateur birdwatchers who enter their observations into the eBIRD database of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a single scientist, no one ever collects data across the scale of a continent, a decade, or multiple decades,\u201d said Tingley. \u201cThe study would not have been possible if it weren\u2019t for citizens \u2013 non-scientists \u2013 who are contributing their observations in their backyards and in their parks so we can actually study what has been happening over an entire continent over more than a decade.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diving deeper into the data to determine whether population numbers of bird species are falling is one of the next steps in the project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe natural world is very complex,\u201d Mayor says. \u201cWhen you kick it with a big change by altering the climate, different parts of that natural world respond in different ways.
