UConn Health Orthopedics & Sports Medicine<\/a> hosted its first International Sports Medicine Symposium on July 14.<\/p>\n

The Symposium gathered more than 50 sports medicine surgeons and researchers from across the United States and Europe to share the latest research advances enhancing care for patients with knee and shoulder conditions and injuries.<\/p>\n

The international conference developed out of the longstanding international sports medicine fellowship program at UConn Health established in 2010 by Dr. Augustus D. Mazzocca, chair the Department of Orthopedic Surgery.<\/p>\n

The one-year fellowship program, focusing on advancing translational research explorations, started with just one fellow and has grown to have eight fellows hailing from Germany, Japan, Switzerland and Austria. Since the program\u2019s inception, the fellows have published over 40 peer-reviewed research articles and presented their findings around the globe.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are very proud of the more than 10 years of translational research advances by the talented fellows in our international sports medicine fellowship,\u201d shared Mazzocca. \u201cWe were excited to host our first successful International Sports Medicine Symposium and look forward to future global collaborations.\u201d<\/p>\n

The keynote speaker of the Symposium was Dr. Andreas Imhoff, chair of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), who is world-renowned for his research in cartilage and tissue engineering, biomechanics of the shoulder and knee joint, and new minimally invasive surgical techniques.<\/p>\n

Other event speakers included Dr.\u00a0Florian Imhoff, Dr. Robert Arciero, Dr. Katherine Coyner, Dr. Corey Edgar, Dr. James Wylie, Dr.\u00a0Kevin Shea, Dr. Bastian Scheiderer, Dr. Daichi Morikawa,\u00a0Dr. Knut Beitzel, and Mary Beth McCarthy.<\/p>\n
