{"id":128434,"date":"2017-08-11T09:34:32","date_gmt":"2017-08-11T13:34:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?post_type=school-college-post&#038;p=128434"},"modified":"2017-08-11T09:34:32","modified_gmt":"2017-08-11T13:34:32","slug":"nutritional-leader-emerges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2017\/08\/nutritional-leader-emerges\/","title":{"rendered":"A nutritional leader emerges"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A UConn nutritional sciences postdoctoral fellow, who was named an \u201cemerging leader\u201d in his field at a recent international event, began the path to nutrition research when he was studying biochemistry as a Nebraska undergraduate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was always curious about science and loved biochemistry. But, I never imagined being in nutritional sciences,\u201d said Tho Pham, who is the first place winner of the postdoctoral fellow category in American Society for Nutrition\u2019s Emerging Leaders in Nutrition Science poster competition at Experimental Biology 2017. Four hundred nutritional scientists judged the competition.<\/p>\n<p>In referring to this award and Pham\u2019s USDA pre and postdoctoral fellowship grants, Department of Nutritional Sciences Head Sung Koo said, \u201cTho is truly an emerging scholar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scholar Pham is not new to receiving honors. For example, his first exposure to nutritional sciences started with an\u00a0<span id=\"more-9658\"><\/span>Undergraduate Creative Activities and Research Experience (UCARE) award at the University of Nebraska\u2013Lincoln where he was a student.
