Only 54 medical students are elected each year to serve as medical student regional delegates and alternate delegates.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the AMA House of Delegates, the 25 percent of students making up the Medical Student Section (MSS) are full voting members and responsible for representing the interests of medical students and their state caucus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is quite an honor and one UConn has not held in recent memory,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/health.uconn.edu\/find-a-provider\/physician\/Jacob-Mary\">Mary Casey Jacob Ph.D.<\/a>, professor in the Departments of Psychiatry and OB\/GYN at UConn School of Medicine and faculty advisor for UConn Heath\u2019s student-based AMA Group led by Topalis and Bageac. \u201cWe are so very proud of the students\u2019 new national leadership roles representing UConn and Connecticut, and their steadfast efforts to bring attention to important healthcare policy changes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs regional delegate, I&#8217;m excited to represent the University of Connecticut as I vote on behalf of medical students within the AMA House of Delegates,\u201d said Bageac, a second-year medical student. \u201cThrough close collaboration with medical societies in our state and New England more broadly, I hope to encourage more medical students to get involved in shaping the future of our healthcare system through organized medicine.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_132907\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-132907\" style=\"width: 186px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-132907 img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Kate-Topalis.png\" alt=\"Kathryn Topalis, new AMA alternate regional delegate.\" width=\"186\" height=\"276\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 186px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 186\/276;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-132907\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kathryn Topalis, new AMA alternate regional delegate from UConn &#8216;s medical school.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI entered medical\u00a0school with the intent to pursue public health initiatives, and my\u00a0experience with\u00a0the AMA has been incredibly rewarding in this regard,\u201d said Topalis, also a second-year medical student. \u201cOn a daily basis, members of our chapter have the opportunity to influence federal health policy, and to address current issues impacting patient health. These new roles will allow\u00a0us to\u00a0continue to promote the ambitions of Connecticut physicians on a national stage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>UConn\u2019s AMA Policy Group empowers UConn medical students to affect federal health policy through the AMA.
