{"id":13310,"date":"2010-04-22T15:00:27","date_gmt":"2010-04-22T19:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=13310"},"modified":"2011-05-31T12:38:33","modified_gmt":"2011-05-31T16:38:33","slug":"candidates-for-governor-engage-in-debate-at-uconn-law-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2010\/04\/candidates-for-governor-engage-in-debate-at-uconn-law-school\/","title":{"rendered":"Candidates for Governor Engage in Debate at UConn Law School"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Eleven candidates for governor gathered at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.law.uconn.edu\/\">UConn Law School<\/a> on Wednesday afternoon, April 21, for two debates before an audience of about 200. The event, which featured seven Republican candidates for the first debate and four Democratic candidates for the second, focused on the future of higher education in Connecticut, the state budget, and Connecticut\u2019s economy, among other issues.<\/p>\n<p>Welcoming the candidates and the audience, UConn President Michael Hogan said, \u201cIt\u2019s no secret that Connecticut, like every other state, faces very difficult choices in the next few years. The University of Connecticut looks forward to being part of the solution to our state\u2019s problems and continuing to be an economic engine for the Northeast.\u201d Hogan said UConn \u2013 with nearly 30,000 students on eight campuses, 115,000 alumni living in Connecticut, and the $2.3 billion it adds to the state\u2019s Gross Domestic Product \u2013 will play a major role in the state\u2019s future.<\/p>\n<p>The debates, which were each about 45 minutes long, were moderated by UConn senior Christopher Duray, editor of the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailycampus.com\/\">Daily Campus<\/a>;<\/em> Keith Phaneuf, a capitol reporter for <a href=\"http:\/\/ctmirror.org\/\">CTMirror.org<\/a>; and Devaughn Ward, a second-year student at the UConn Law School and vice president of the Student Bar Association.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13306\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13306\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/gubernatorial-11_lg.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-13306  img-responsive lazyload\" title=\"University President Michael Hogan speaks during the gubernatorial debates held at the Law School on April 21.\" data-src=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/gubernatorial-11_lg-300x202.jpg\" alt=\"&lt;p&gt;President Michael Hogan speaks during the gubernatorial debates held at the William H.
