Dr. Kathryn Libal,<\/a>\u00a0associate\u00a0professor of social work and human\u00a0rights and director of UConn\u2019s Human\u00a0Rights Institute<\/a>, is in the second year\u00a0of a study of the politics of refugee\u00a0resettlement in the United States.\u00a0Conducted with School of Social Work\u00a0colleagues Dr. Megan Berthold<\/a>, Dr. Scott Harding<\/a>, and\u00a0doctoral candidate Grace Felten<\/a>, this\u00a0project centers on a model currently\u00a0used in Connecticut, which relies on\u00a0local service agencies and volunteers\u00a0to resettle refugees from countries\u00a0including Syria. When it became clear\u00a0in 2015 that significant numbers of Syrians would need resettlement, many\u00a0U.S. governors closed their states to\u00a0refugees, citing security concerns and a\u00a0culture gap. But Connecticut is one of a\u00a0handful of states that offered to welcome\u00a0refugees. Dr. Libal and her colleagues\u00a0are interviewing resettlement volunteers\u00a0and service agencies about this work.\u00a0\u201cWe\u2019re interested in understanding not\u00a0only what these volunteers are doing,\u00a0but also their motivation for doing it,\u201d\u00a0Dr. Libal explains. The researchers also\u00a0are gathering data about anti-immigrant\u00a0and anti-refugee sentiment in the United\u00a0States, and preparing to interview\u00a0recently resettled refugees after their\u00a0help from the voluntary agencies ends.\u00a0Dr. Berthold and Dr. Libal also co-edited\u00a0a forthcoming book, Refugees and\u00a0Asylum Seekers in the United States:\u00a0Interdisciplinary Perspectives<\/em> (Praeger).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
