Miriam Valdovinos<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Dr. Miriam Valdovinos<\/a> has studied\u00a0help-seeking behaviors among\u00a0undocumented Latina women in\u00a0domestic violence shelters in Seattle.\u00a0She recently conducted a national\u00a0webinar sharing her findings and\u00a0discussing culturally relevant research\u00a0methodologies for the National Latin@\u00a0Network, an organization focused\u00a0on research, practice, and policy to\u00a0address domestic violence in the\u00a0Latin@ community.\u00a0Dr. Valdovinos is currently collaborating\u00a0with Dr. Rebecca Thomas<\/a>,\u00a0associate professor of social work, and\u00a0former student Lisa Yagaloff, project\u00a0coordinator, on a needs-assessment\u00a0project for the Trafficking in Persons\u00a0(TIP) Council in Connecticut.\u00a0They are using the United States\u00a0Department of State\u2019s paradigm for\u00a0countering sex and labor trafficking\u2014prevention, protection, prosecution,\u00a0and partnership\u2014to prepare a survey\u00a0for survivors of human trafficking, as\u00a0well as clinicians, practitioners, law\u00a0enforcement officers, attorneys, and\u00a0FBI agents, \u201canyone who at any point\u00a0comes in contact with a survivor,\u201d Dr.\u00a0Valdovinos explains. \u201cWe want to know\u00a0what services are being provided in the\u00a0State of Connecticut, and what we are\u00a0still lacking.\u201d Connecticut is particularly\u00a0vulnerable to human trafficking because\u00a0it sits in the corridor between New York\u00a0and Boston, Dr. Thomas explains.\u00a0Once the team collects the survey data\u00a0and conducts multiple focus groups,\u00a0\u201cthe TIP Council will develop an action\u00a0plan based on the findings to coordinate\u00a0a response,\u201d Dr. Thomas says.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
