{"id":134816,"date":"2018-02-28T09:54:18","date_gmt":"2018-02-28T14:54:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?post_type=school-college-post&#038;p=134816"},"modified":"2018-03-30T09:43:34","modified_gmt":"2018-03-30T13:43:34","slug":"horticultural-scientist-focuses-research-extension-greenhouse-sustainability","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2018\/02\/horticultural-scientist-focuses-research-extension-greenhouse-sustainability\/","title":{"rendered":"Horticultural scientist focuses research and extension on greenhouse sustainability"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As an assistant professor in the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.canr.uconn.edu\/plsc\/plsc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Department of Plant Science and Landscape Architecture<\/a>\u00a0(PSLA) with a 70 percent extension appointment,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/plantscience.uconn.edu\/People\/Faculty\/Raudales.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rosa Raudales<\/a>\u00a0focuses on applied research that meets the needs of Connecticut greenhouse growers.<\/p>\n<p>Raudales\u2019s studies center on water quality for irrigation purposes and the various strategies to manage microbes and unwanted chemicals within irrigation systems.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWater quality is an important issue for farmers, as well as for continued sustainability,\u201d Raudales explains. \u201cGreenhouse production is about getting the most yield with the fewest resources possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her first step was to conduct a survey to determine the needs of local growers. Most indicated that they do not test their water on a regular basis; rather, they start monitoring if they discover a problem.
