Her novel research is focused on identifying and developing\u00a0 new treatments for a variety of pediatric and neonatal diseases that affect the lungs and esophagus.<\/p>\n<p>On March 28 Finck was one of eight award winners of 50 finalists announced at CTC\u2019s Women of Innovation awards gala.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCongratulations to Dr. Finck on winning the Women of Innovation award,\u201d said Dr. Bruce T. Liang, dean of UConn School of Medicine. \u201cWe are proud of you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. Finck is an outstanding physician scientist, leader and mentor for young women who want to pursue STEM careers.\u00a0 She is making integral contributions to the sphere of medicine, and we are absolutely thrilled her hard work and dedication to our patients is being recognized,\u201d said Gil Peri, president &amp; COO, Connecticut Children\u2019s Medical Center. \u201cAs Connecticut Children\u2019s Surgeon-in-Chief, we are proud of the impact she is making across the region and nationally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Each year CTC\u2019s Women of Innovation program celebrates the growing network of women in STEM in the state who are creating tomorrow\u2019s advancements through their efforts in Connecticut today. Honorees range from scientists, researchers, and academics to manufacturers, student leaders, entrepreneurs and technicians.<\/p>\n<p>Women of Innovation finalists are nominated by their peers, coworkers, and mentors, and are selected based on their professional experience, history of innovation, ability to think creatively and solve problems, and demonstration of leadership.<\/p>\n<p>Finck was nominated by Dr. Marja Hurley, professor of medicine and orthopedics, and The Group on Women in Medicine and Science (GWIMS)\u00a0at UConn Health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. Finck you are doing amazing work as a surgeon, physician-scientist,\u201d shared Hurley. \u201cAs Chair of the Group on Women in Medicine and Sciences, it is my pleasure to ensure that our women faculty are recognized for their work.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_127142\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-127142\" style=\"width: 178px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-127142 img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Coyner.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"178\" height=\"231\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 178px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 178\/231;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-127142\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Katherine Coyner<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Additionally, at the CTC Women of Innovation event UConn Health\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/health.uconn.edu\/find-a-provider\/physician\/Coyner-Katherine\">Dr. Katherine Coyner<\/a>, an orthopedic surgeon, was honored as a finalist for academic innovation and leadership.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are incredibly proud of Dr. Coyner and her accomplishments,\u201d said Dr. Augustus D.\u00a0Mazzocca, chair of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at UConn Health. \u201cShe is an example of a great orthopedic surgeon.
