A Primer for FDA and USDA Labeling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This month, the United States Department of Agriculture <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/documents\/2018\/05\/04\/2018-09389\/national-bioengineered-food-disclosure-standard\">proposed new guidelines<\/a> for labeling foods that contain genetically modified ingredients, a step that has been highly anticipated since the law took effect in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>In preparation for the guidelines, John Bovay, an assistant professor in the College of Agriculture, Health, and Natural Resources, and colleagues launched the <a href=\"https:\/\/gmo.uconn.edu\/\">GMO Working Group<\/a> at UConn to disseminate information about a variety of issues related to genetically modified organisms, or GMOs.<\/p>\n<p>Bovay has been investigating how the legislation might be implemented, and the ways it could reverberate through the national economy.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of the commonly used but somewhat stigmatized terms \u201cGMO\u2019\u2019 and \u201cgenetically engineered,\u201d the federal guidelines propose labels that say \u201cbioengineered\u201d or \u201cBE.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Food producers would be given a choice of three disclosure methods: spelling out the information, as in \u201ccontains a bioengineered food ingredient;\u201d using a standard icon; or affixing a QR code that directs consumers to a website with more information.
