Sherise Truman ’18 MSW will receive the Council on Social Work Education’s (CSWE) Partners in International Education (PIE) Student award at the CSWE Annual Program Meeting\u00a0 in Florida. As an intern for Dr. Rebecca Thomas, Sherise was involved in several International Center projects and qualitative research teams interviewing Karen refugees in the Hartford community and Syrian refugees in Armenia.\u00a0 She is being recognized for her programmatic innovations and contributions to the body of international education while a student at the School of Social Work.<\/p>\n
In nominating Sherise, Dr. Rebecca Thomas, director of the Center for International Social Work Studies, described Sherise as having a strong work ethic and commitment to human rights and social justice.\u00a0 “She is passionate about working with immigrants, especially refugees.\u00a0 She is an advocate for first generation college bound students and has\u00a0demonstrated outstanding contributions to the field of international social work education,” stated Dr. Thomas.\u00a0As an MSW student, Sherise worked hard to educate the school community on issues of immigration and migration with a focus on DACA students.<\/p>\n
