{"id":141426,"date":"2018-09-17T09:37:00","date_gmt":"2018-09-17T13:37:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=141426"},"modified":"2018-09-17T09:45:38","modified_gmt":"2018-09-17T13:45:38","slug":"uconn-lead-new-england-humanities-consortium","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2018\/09\/uconn-lead-new-england-humanities-consortium\/","title":{"rendered":"UConn to Lead New England Humanities Consortium"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The University of Connecticut will lead a new collaboration of colleges and universities in this region forming the <a href=\"https:\/\/nehc.uconn.edu\/\">New England Humanities Consortium<\/a> (NEHC), which will focus on programming in such\u00a0fields as history, language, art, literature, and philosophy.<\/p>\n<p>Established with the support of a $100,000 grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the consortium includes Amherst College, Colby College, Dartmouth College, Northeastern University, Tufts University, University of New Hampshire, University of Rhode\u00a0Island, University of Vermont, Wellesley College, and Wheaton College.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Northeast is a worldwide center for research in the humanities, and this consortium will allow us to do something genuinely new \u2013 to embark on\u00a0initiatives that no single institution could accomplish on its own,\u201d says Michael Lynch, director of the\u00a0UConn\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fhumanities.uconn.edu%2F&amp;data=02%7C01%7C%7C243f192f9d13451c0ef208d615079382%7C17f1a87e2a254eaab9df9d439034b080%7C0%7C0%7C636719519609709561&amp;sdata=LGnEV4FZNd5dXdbu8n%2BobHWsJ9RXdHg3Z7kooOr%2B%2FmI%3D&amp;reserved=0\">Humanities Institute<\/a>\u00a0(UCHI), who will\u00a0serve as the consortium\u2019s first executive director.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n  <p>This consortium will allow us &#8230; to embark on\u00a0initiatives that no single institution could accomplish on its own. <cite> &#8212 Michael Lynch<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The first of its kind in the region, the consortium will promote intellectual collaboration, interdisciplinary exchange, and innovative educational programming for faculty, students, and the communities they\u00a0serve. \u00a0The Mellon grant will support initial\u00a0pilot\u00a0programming and assist in the development of administrative practices as well as future projects.<\/p>\n<p>Two pilot projects are now planned. The first includes the formation of a working group to aid in supporting, mentoring, and creating research collaborations for faculty of color in New England. The second is a lecture series, \u201cTime\u2019s Up: What Now?\u201d that will move between students, faculty, and speakers across three campuses to serve as a model for future joint speaker and faculty events.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe NEHC and the support from the Mellon allow humanities centers an audience and energy we could not have had before. We are stronger as a group, and can move humanities dialogues and activism to a new level,\u201d says\u00a0Alexis Boylan, associate professor of art and art history, and consortium associate director.\u00a0\u00a0&#8220;This is a truly exciting moment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Eleven northeast colleges and universities formed the consortium with support from the Andrew W.
