Maria Latta &#8217;20 (Pharmacy Studies, PHR) is one of the first group of four students to take advantage of fellowship opportunity. --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/300;\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-144909\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Presentation graphic.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Nathaniel Rickles, Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice and Latta&#8217;s advisor, says &#8220;Ms. Latta\u00a0took much initiative in deciding to do her Legacy Fellowship research\u00a0project investigating how\u00a0cultural and other factors\u00a0impact decisions to use TCM.\u00a0 Her passions for this research enabled\u00a0her to\u00a0develop a comprehensive survey based on a robust literature search that examined past empirical\u00a0studies about TCM use and identified Andersen&#8217;s Model of\u00a0Healthcare Utilization as a theoretical basis\u00a0for her proposed hypotheses.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to Rickles, Latta&#8217;s 627 respondents, obtained through\u00a0Amazon Mechanical Turk, \u00a0yielded important findings:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\u00a0an individual&#8217;s network and how others in the network view\u00a0TCM were critical factors affecting decisions to use TCM across mental and physical health problems,\u00a0and<\/li>\n<li>there are\u00a0different sets of psychosocial and cultural factors that\u00a0affect an individual&#8217;s\u00a0decision to use TCM to treat a mental health vs. a physical health problem.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_20181010_190136.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-144910 img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_20181010_190136-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Maria Latta, pharmacy student, presents her TCM finding'sgs\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_20181010_190136-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_20181010_190136-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_20181010_190136-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_20181010_190136-630x420.jpg 630w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_20181010_190136-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_20181010_190136.jpg 1500w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 640px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 640\/427;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While Rickles says there need to be larger studies of the topic, this is the first known work to identify how different individual, interpersonal, environmental and cultural factors interact\u00a0to influence decisions to use TCM given different types of health conditions.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This work will be great first steps in Ms. Latta&#8217;s efforts to help her pharmacy colleagues reach a deeper understanding of the importance of collecting a patient&#8217;s\u00a0social and cultural history and how such experiences and networks\u00a0impact patient\u00a0decisions to use or not use certain medicines for certain conditions,&#8221;
