Depending on the destination \u2013 especially if it\u2019s in a developing country \u2013 your research probably shouldn\u2019t stop at flights, accommodations, and attractions, say UConn Health physicians.<\/p>\n<p>It would be wise to also look into the potential health risks specific to that area of the world, and plan accordingly. (Tina Encarnacion\/UConn Health photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A polio outbreak recently was reported in Niger, and the Democratic Republic of Congo has been dealing with an Ebola outbreak.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough these issues grab the headlines, other illnesses, including hepatitis A, malaria, typhoid, and diarrheal diseases are much more likely to affect the average traveler,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/health.uconn.edu\/find-a-provider\/physician\/Dieckhaus-Kevin\">Dr. Kevin Dieckhaus<\/a>, infectious diseases physician who heads the <a href=\"https:\/\/health.uconn.edu\/infectious-diseases\/international-travelers-medical-service\/\">International Traveler\u2019s Medical Service<\/a> at UConn Health. \u201cThese common issues are also are among the most preventable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Based on where you\u2019re headed, your doctor can provide you with tips on avoiding common problems and vaccination against what you might encounter \u2013 such as typhoid, yellow fever, meningitis, Japanese encephalitis, or rabies \u2013 as well as send you with medications, such as pills for malaria prevention or antibiotics for diarrhea, to have on hand if needed.<\/p>\n<p>Infectious diseases physicians are well-versed in travel health concerns and can provide the advice and medication necessary to give you and your family the best chance of staying healthy during your trip and coming home healthy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn addition to vaccinations and medications, we also can counsel on travel health insurance needs, access to medical care where you\u2019re going, and even security advisories,\u201d Dieckhaus says. \u201cWe provide both pre-travel consultations as well as evaluation of those who return with travel-related illness.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_144993\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-144993\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-144993 img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Nichols.jpg\" alt=\"Ginger Nichols, certified genetic counselor\" width=\"160\" height=\"208\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 160px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 160\/208;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-144993\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ginger Nichols is a certified genetic counselor at MotherToBabyCT at UConn Health.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Another resource for those who could be pregnant, plan to become parents, or are breastfeeding, is MotherToBaby (MTB), a service of the Organization of Teratology Information Specialists. The group <a href=\"https:\/\/health.uconn.edu\/medical-genetics\/mothertobaby-ct-2\/mothertobaby-ct\/\">MotherToBaby CT<\/a>, located at UConn Health, is the Connecticut affiliate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you are pregnant or are planning a pregnancy, contact MotherToBaby or review areas of concern for travel on the CDC website before you pay for airfare or hotel rooms,\u201d says Ginger Nichols, a certified genetic counselor at MotherToBabyCT, which provides information on potential exposures to women who are nursing, pregnant, or are considering pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p>The ideal time to meet with a medical expert is at least four to six weeks before your planned trip.
