It is the first time a UConn student has received this award.\u00a0The annual scholarship is highly competitive and an important part of a forum that promotes discussion, continuing education and the exchange of ideas on advances in pharmaceutical sciences and technology.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gupta&#8217;s research<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-150578 img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/1-242x300.jpg\" alt=\"Anand Gupta receive NJPhAST scholarship\" width=\"300\" height=\"372\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/1-242x300.jpg 242w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/1-339x420.jpg 339w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/1.jpg 591w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/372;\" \/><\/a>Gupta&#8217;s poster \u201cFormulation and characterization of curcumin loaded polymeric micelles produced <em>via <\/em>continuous processing using Co-axial jet in Co-flow technology\u201d\u00a0illustrates process optimization using Curcumin as a model drug for his research project which is geared towards creating anti-cancer polymeric nanoparticles using this innovative technology developed in Dr. Diane Burgess\u2019 laboratory at UConn.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Most\u00a0pharmaceutical companies\u00a0depend heavily\u00a0on labor-intensive small batch manufacturing, 50% of which fail to meet quality and rest are combined to form a larger batch with barely passable quality,&#8221; says Gupta. \u00a0&#8220;This inefficient process not only causes billions of loss in dollar value and low-quality product but also drug shortages for years.&#8221;\u00a0Gupta\u2019s research points to a way to continuously and consistently manufacture lipid\/polymer-based nanoparticles using co-axial flow technology.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Helping patients fight cancer &#8211; the ultimate goal<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The product can be used as an anti-cancer injectable, a treatment option for cancer patients.\u00a0Gupta&#8217;s research helps progress the field of pharmaceuticals by optimizing a fully automatic nanoparticle-drug manufacturing platform that solves the shortcomings of the traditional method.
