Public school enrollment declined by nearly 20% and the buildings that weren\u2019t destroyed continue to struggle with shortages of staff and supplies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany schools were destroyed during the hurricanes so there were many crowded classrooms, some including 28 to 30 children,\u201d says Pierre LePage, a nurse in UConn Health\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/health.uconn.edu\/plan-your-visit\/locations-and-directions\/west-hartford\">West Hartford office<\/a>. \u201cSchool conditions are not great \u2013 some where you could not drink from the water fountains, others where teachers have to supply their own toilet supplies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>LePage, application analyst Lori DelVaglio, and ophthalmology technician Melanie Perez were part of a group of more than 40 health care professionals from throughout the United States who volunteered in St. Croix, St. Thomas, or both.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI decided to volunteer my time to help the less fortunate due to economic status and natural disasters because my family has suffered from the same situations,\u201d says Perez, who was in St. Thomas for the second week.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_150746\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-150746\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-150746 size-medium img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/1905-StCroix-headline-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Front page of St. Croix Avis\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/1905-StCroix-headline-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/1905-StCroix-headline-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/1905-StCroix-headline-630x420.jpg 630w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/1905-StCroix-headline-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/1905-StCroix-headline.jpg 799w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/200;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-150746\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The volunteers&#8217; mission made front page news in a local newspaper.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThese children have been through a lot,\u201d says DelVaglio, who also was in St. Thomas for a week. \u201cTwo hurricanes in two weeks, where the howling wind damaged some of their eardrums, affecting their hearing. Others lost their glasses or they were left behind when they had to flee their homes for safety. (Image provided by Pierre LePage)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt was extremely rewarding, especially when we received an outpouring of love and respect not only from the children we serviced but the community as a whole,\u201d Perez says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe met some very resilient children who have lost so much, yet they were happy, thankful, and very respectful,\u201d LePage says. \u201cIt was so rewarding. The children take your heart away, one story after another.
