{"id":153754,"date":"2019-09-05T07:14:47","date_gmt":"2019-09-05T11:14:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=153754"},"modified":"2019-09-06T09:24:42","modified_gmt":"2019-09-06T13:24:42","slug":"neurosurgery-residency-places-uconn-health-exclusive-group","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2019\/09\/neurosurgery-residency-places-uconn-health-exclusive-group\/","title":{"rendered":"Neurosurgery Residency Places UConn Health in Exclusive Group"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>UConn Health announced the launch of a seven-year <a href=\"https:\/\/health.uconn.edu\/graduate-medical-education\/neurological-surgery-residency-program\/\">residency in neurological surgery<\/a>, one of only a handful in the nation.<\/p>\n<p>In establishing the training program with Hartford Hospital and Connecticut Children\u2019s Medical Center, UConn joins an exclusive group \u2013 less than 2% of U.S. hospitals have such a program.<\/p>\n<p>The program also meets a vision of <a href=\"https:\/\/health.uconn.edu\/find-a-provider\/physician\/bulsara-ketan\">Dr. Ketan Bulsara<\/a>, chief of the UConn Health Division of Neurosurgery, who will oversee the process as the residency program director.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believed we could acquire such an elite residency program because the environment was right at UConn Health,\u201d Bulsara says. \u201cIt takes excellence, not only in neurosurgery \u2013 cranial and spine \u2013 but it takes excellence at every single level of a medical institution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUConn Health, through this unique collaboration that we\u2019ve set up with Hartford Healthcare and Connecticut Children\u2019s Medical Center, is positioned to train the next generation of leaders in neurological surgery, who I\u2019m convinced will one day find solutions for problems that perplex us today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bulsara credits <a href=\"https:\/\/facultydirectory.uchc.edu\/profile?profileId=Simon-Richard\">Dr. Richard Simon<\/a>, professor of surgery and neurosurgery and medical chief of staff, and <a href=\"https:\/\/health.uconn.edu\/find-a-provider\/physician\/onyiuke-hilary\">Dr. Hilary Onyiuke<\/a>, neurosurgery director of UConn Health\u2019s Comprehensive Spine Center, with building a \u201cfoundation of academic excellence.\u201d He also acknowledges the UConn School of Medicine\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/health.uconn.edu\/graduate-medical-education\/\">Graduate Medical Education office<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe new residency program would not have been possible without the tireless work of Graduate Medical Education Director Martha Wilkie,\u201d Bulsara says. \u201cHer passion for education, coupled with that of <a href=\"https:\/\/facultydirectory.uchc.edu\/profile?profileId=Nissen-Jacqueline\">Dr. Jaqueline \u201cKiki\u201d Nissen<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/facultydirectory.uchc.edu\/profile?profileId=Angus-Steven\">Dr. Steven Angus<\/a>, is truly something that should be celebrated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>UConn has five dozen residency and fellowship training programs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. Bulsara and the new neurosurgery residency program are on a clear path to help UConn establish its position as a national leader in training the next generation of physicians,\u201d Wilkie says. \u201cWe are all very proud of him and the entire team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bulsara also credits the program&#8217;s establishment to the support of <a href=\"https:\/\/facultydirectory.uchc.edu\/profile?profileId=Liang-Bruce\">Dr. Bruce Liang<\/a>, medical dean, <a href=\"https:\/\/health.uconn.edu\/about\/leadership\">Dr. Andrew Agwunobi<\/a>, UConn Health CEO and executive vice president for health affairs, and <a href=\"https:\/\/facultydirectory.uchc.edu\/profile?profileId=McFadden-David\">Dr. David McFadden<\/a>, surgery chair, for UConn\u2019s first new medical residency program since 2006.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a major achievement for UConn Health, thanks to the leadership of Dr. Bulsara and our GME program, and it validates our excellence in clinical care, education, and research,\u201d Agwunobi says.<\/p>\n<p>Adds Liang, \u201cWhat a proud moment for the UConn School of Medicine, for UConn Health, and for the future of medicine.
