Heard of Her Sport?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you thought <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">underwater rugby<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was the punchline of a joke, then you do not know much about the sport that can evoke what might be described as an underwater symphony.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The object of the game, not unlike basketball, is to put a weighted ball into a basket at the bottom of a pool. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But to UConn junior <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usauwrwomen.com\/laura-sofiacutea-bedoya.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Laura Sof\u00eda Bedoya<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, of East Haven, Connecticut, a forward and vice captain of the 15-member USA Women Underwater Rugby Team, it is much more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Just assisting my teammates in making it to the basket, whether I&#8217;m making the goal or my teammates making the goal, being able to watch the game unfold and being in the moment,\u201d the political science and Latin American studies major says. \u201cJust see it all happen and come together. It kind of feels like a symphony underwater.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-154916 alignleft img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Bedoya.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"435\" height=\"476\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Bedoya.png 517w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Bedoya-274x300.png 274w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Bedoya-384x420.png 384w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 435px) 100vw, 435px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 435px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 435\/476;\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usauwrwomen.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Underwater rugby<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is played in a pool with a depth between 11 \u00bd feet to 16 \u00bd feet deep. Like regular rugby, it is a contact sport. Each team has 15 players, 12 of whom play in any one game and three substitutes. During the game, six players are in the pool with six players on the side who can be substituted at any time. The team is made up of a goalkeeper, defenders, and attackers. The players wear fins, diving masks and snorkels.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A plastic ball filled with salt water is used to score a goal; it is heavy and will sink to the bottom of the pool if dropped. The goals, which are shaped as baskets, are placed on the bottom of each side of the pool and are made of steel. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.uv-sport.dk\/cmas\/English_doc\/CMAS_Int_UWR_december2008.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The object<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the game is to put the ball into the opposing team&#8217;s goal. Among the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uwrugby.org\/faq\/rules\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rules<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: No pulling on a player\u2019s suit, snorkel or fins, no elbowing and no strangling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usauwrwomen.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to USA Women\u2019s UWR, as it is known, underwater rugby was invented in K\u00f6ln, Germany, in 1961, and became popular in the Nordic countries under the name UW-Polo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=sXQt2dqsTLQ&amp;list=PLal3_-UX3RGZ_1Z-8Lpe71q2W2jG3QFY1&amp;index=20\">Cameras in the pool help spectators watch<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;It&#8217;s all about rhythm and our tempo because when we&#8217;re relaying in and out of the water, we have to be really precise,\u201d Bedoya says. \u201cA majority of time, all six players are not underwater; it&#8217;s usually three to five who are underwater and have to be able to relay coming out, breathing as the other three in the water are going down.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnd then, obviously, when we&#8217;re really out of breath, we just switch out of the water, making sure that the whole rotation, not only the rotation of the ball at the goal but the rotation of all of us. It&#8217;s a whole rhythm of many different things.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bedoya says she began playing because both of her parents played it in their native Colombia and because she was a competitive swimmer since childhood. She plays for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/makosuwr\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Connecticut Makos<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/makosuwr\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">club team<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which was established in 2003 and is based in East Haven and is coached by her father, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theday.com\/article\/20100429\/NWS10\/304299898\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jose Bedoya<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. (The mako is considered the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.floridamuseum.ufl.edu\/discover-fish\/species-profiles\/isurus-oxyrinchus\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fastest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shark in the world.) She joined the USA team, which competes internationally, in January 2019. This summer, the team <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportalsub.net\/en\/underwater-rugby-graz-2019\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">placed 11th<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the world championships in Graz, Austria.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cUWR is not like any other conventional sport. Mostly any other individual or team sport is practiced in a two-dimensional field and players can breathe at any time,\u201d says the USA team\u2019s coach, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/WomensUnderwaterRugbyUSA\/posts\/meet-the-team-name-juan-sevillanonickname-coachposition-coach-counselor-othersho\/2294981334104592\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Juan Sevillano<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Training and practicing have made Bedoya a good player, Sevillano says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cShe has the passion to learn more and be better, she listens to her coaches and adapts to the teams she plays with,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bedoya <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/laura-bedoya-a86bb2171\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an administrative assistant at UConn\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/elin.uconn.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El Instituto<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Institute of Latina\/o, Caribbean, and Latin American Studies. It is a multidisciplinary research and teaching institute serving the information needs of Latinx people in Connecticut and nationwide. She says that work, and meeting other underwater rugby players from around the world, by competing in Norway, Italy, Austria, Canada, Spain and France, is helping prepare for a career in international relations as an attorney.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;As an athlete at this level, I have to find a way to be responsible for my academics, be responsible for my team, for my country, also,\u201d she says. \u201cIt&#8217;s all about balancing it all. I don&#8217;t really don&#8217;t have time to think &#8212; I just, like, do it, I&#8217;m constantly on the go.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I think that competitive spirit of mine motivates me to want to be at the top not only as an athlete but as a student.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UWR \u201cvery addictive,\u201d which can be a good thing, Sevillano says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPlaying underwater rugby can provide a sanctuary for stress, a place to share and make new friends, and the benefits of training body and mind,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Milwaukee journalist <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/tomkertscher.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tom Kertscher<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was a 35-year newspaper reporter, finishing that career at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
