{"id":155312,"date":"2019-10-10T13:00:28","date_gmt":"2019-10-10T17:00:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?post_type=school-college-post&#038;p=155312"},"modified":"2019-10-10T13:00:28","modified_gmt":"2019-10-10T17:00:28","slug":"remote-sensing-expert-studies-relationship-land-change-climate-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2019\/10\/remote-sensing-expert-studies-relationship-land-change-climate-change\/","title":{"rendered":"Remote sensing expert studies relationship between land change and climate change"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In January 2019, Zhe Zhu joined the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nrme.uconn.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Department of Natural Resources and the Environment<\/a> as an assistant professor specializing in developing remote sensing techniques to track land changes in the global landscape. Says Zhu, \u201cI am interested in the four W\u2019s\u2014where, when, what and why the land is changing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His global environmental <a href=\"https:\/\/gerslab.uconn.edu\/our-team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">remote sensing laboratory<\/a>\u00a0 focuses on these issues and how the data relate to climate change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe earth is a closed system and we know the increase in CO<sub>2<\/sub> is creating an imbalance,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/nre.uconn.edu\/Faculty_and_Staff\/faculty_and_staff-zhu.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zhu<\/a> says. \u201cThe more imbalance, the more danger. We know the CO<sub>2<\/sub> levels are increasing at an alarming rate, but I also notice some positive changes and feedback from current research such as the increase in vegetation and its ability to trap CO<sub>2<\/sub> in the ocean.
