{"id":156442,"date":"2019-11-14T09:53:48","date_gmt":"2019-11-14T14:53:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?post_type=school-college-post&#038;p=156442"},"modified":"2019-11-22T15:18:33","modified_gmt":"2019-11-22T20:18:33","slug":"forest-management-researcher-designs-museum-installation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2019\/11\/forest-management-researcher-designs-museum-installation\/","title":{"rendered":"Forest management researcher designs museum installation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Amanda Bunce, a Ph.D. student in the <a href=\"http:\/\/nre.uconn.edu\/\">Department of Natural Resources and the Environment<\/a>, recently translated her forestry research into an art installation. In a collaboration with faculty and students in <a href=\"https:\/\/sfa.uconn.edu\/\">School of Fine Arts<\/a>, she created a piece about tree sway for the <a href=\"http:\/\/aldrichart.org\/article\/weather-report\">Weather Report<\/a>, an exhibit currently on view at <a href=\"http:\/\/aldrichart.org\/\">The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Weather Report explores weather phenomena and the Earth\u2019s atmosphere through different visual media, including sculpture, drawing, painting, installation and video. According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/aldrichart.org\/uploads\/article\/WeatherReportPRCopy.pdf\">press release<\/a>, the exhibit aims \u201cto reveal the sky as a site where the romantic, the political, the social, and the scientific co-exist and inform one another.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bunce, who completed her undergraduate degree in studio art, was approached by artist <a href=\"https:\/\/tclf.org\/it-takes-one-pat-pickett\">Pat Pickett<\/a> about turning her research into an artistic form for the exhibition. They first met at the 8<sup>th<\/sup> International Conference on Wind and Trees at the National Center for Atmospheric Research\u2019s Mesa Laboratory in Boulder, CO in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI gave a talk about my research and she gave a talk about her art,\u201d says Bunce. \u201cAbout a year later, Pat told me that she was in this upcoming show at the Aldrich and the organizers were looking to incorporate some science. She suggested they contact me. It\u2019s ironic because I got my bachelor\u2019s in art and I said, \u2018That\u2019s it for that.
