{"id":15674,"date":"2013-05-22T15:27:13","date_gmt":"2013-05-22T15:27:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/d45h139.public.uconn.edu\/sites\/news\/?p=15674"},"modified":"2025-01-29T15:06:43","modified_gmt":"2025-01-29T20:06:43","slug":"uconn-researchers-develop-some-of-the-worlds-smallest-metallic-nanorods-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2013\/05\/uconn-researchers-develop-some-of-the-worlds-smallest-metallic-nanorods-2\/","title":{"rendered":"UConn Researchers Develop Some of the World&#8217;s Smallest Metallic Nanorods"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry-meta\"><em>By <span class=\"url fn n\">Colin Poitras<\/span> for UConn Today<\/em><\/div>\n<p>Two graduate-level researchers in the School of Engineering have grown some of the world\u2019s smallest metallic nanorods; a significant scientific breakthrough that their faculty advisor says is a testament to UConn\u2019s robust graduate education programs.<\/p>\n<p>Working under the guidance of Professor Hanchen Huang, postdoctoral researcher Xiaobin Niu and Ph.D. candidate Stephen Stagon broke new ground when they developed the theoretical f<a href=\"http:\/\/d45h139.public.uconn.edu\/sites\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/nanorods1a.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-15713 img-responsive lazyload\" alt=\"nanorods1a\" data-src=\"http:\/\/d45h139.public.uconn.edu\/sites\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/nanorods1a.jpg\" width=\"349\" height=\"276\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 349px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 349\/276;\" \/><\/a>ramework for metallic nanorod growth using a process known as physical vapor deposition.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers then used that knowledge to successfully grow noble-metal nanorods 10 nanometers in diameter, which are the smallest ever recorded using physical vapor deposition. The findings were recently published in <span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><i><a href=\"http:\/\/prl.aps.org\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">Physical Review Letters<\/span><\/a><\/i><\/span>, the world\u2019s foremost physics journal.
