{"id":156893,"date":"2019-12-04T08:40:55","date_gmt":"2019-12-04T13:40:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=156893"},"modified":"2019-12-03T22:16:30","modified_gmt":"2019-12-04T03:16:30","slug":"uconn-alums-want-roast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2019\/12\/uconn-alums-want-roast\/","title":{"rendered":"UConn Alums Want You to &#8216;Roast&#8217; Them"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Three recent UConn alumni are on the verge of releasing their first entrepreneurial venture, a unique card game called <em>Roast Me. <\/em>The game brings a twist to good-natured comedic gibes among friends, with a gameplay style similar to &#8220;adult&#8221; card games that have become popular in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>Geared toward the college demographic, <em>Roast Me<\/em> asks participants questions like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Who here comes up with ideas that make you question your friendship?<\/li>\n<li>Send a Venmo request to your ex that says, \u201cFor the times I had to spend with you.\u2019\u2019<\/li>\n<li>Stand up and make a toast about the player you roasted, but list all of their character flaws. You have 45 seconds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cWe want this game to bring people together and remind everyone that it\u2019s alright to laugh at each other, and that it\u2019s good to laugh at ourselves as often as possible,\u2019\u2019 said co-creator Chris Mueller.<\/p>\n<p>Mueller\u2019s business partners include fellow Class of 2019 graduates Ben Morneault and Kwame \u201cAto\u2019\u2019 Eyiah. Their game is for sale now at <a href=\"https:\/\/roast-me.myshopify.com\/\">their website,<\/a>\u00a0 and will soon be available through Amazon.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Entrepreneurs Were Born At UConn<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Morneault, Eyiah, and Mueller are all now employed at Loeb.nyc, a startup lab and early-stage private investor. But their entrepreneurial journey started at UConn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUConn\u2019s support was crucial. Without it, there would be no <em>Roast Me<\/em>,\u2019\u2019 Morneault said. \u201cNone of us knew we wanted to be entrepreneurs when we came to UConn. Thanks to our classes, mentors, and entrepreneurial experiences on campus, we were empowered to take action on our ideas.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>David Noble, a management professor and director of UConn\u2019s Werth Institute for Entrepreneurship &amp; Innovation, said he thinks the three alumni are well-equipped for success.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese three students have taken the process of engagement and education to the max. They are the prototype versions of what we want to accomplish at UConn,\u2019\u2019 Noble said. \u201cThis is only their first product, and we expect to see much more of the <em>Roast Me<\/em> team over the years.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Morneault, Mueller, and Eyiah, who met through a combination of luck and circumstances, each bring something unique to the business team.<\/p>\n<p>Morneault was inspired by his Dad, who coached him in sports and encouraged him to be tenacious in life. \u201cDon\u2019t let anyone tell you that you can\u2019t do something,\u2019\u2019 his father, Bill, said.<\/p>\n<p>Mueller, who, like Morneault, majored in business management with a concentration in entrepreneurship, said his father, Ben, and grandfather, Hans, were both independent artists with high-profile clients. He thinks his entrepreneurial streak came from them.<\/p>\n<p>And, Eyiah, an economics major, is continuously inspired by music and brings comedic interaction to the team. His family is\u00a0 known for familial, light-hearted \u2018trash talking.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><strong>UConn Experiences Opened Many Doors <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The UConn experts who helped them become entrepreneurs \u2013 from faculty and staff to alumni and other business professionals with UConn ties\u2014are too many to name, the <em>Roast Me<\/em> team said. But there were three pivotal experiences that they all shared.<\/p>\n<p>First, all three enrolled in entrepreneurship courses taught by Noble. The courses ignited their interest in entrepreneurship and gave them the knowledge and perspective they needed to begin exploring their ideas.<\/p>\n<p>Next, they developed &#8220;real world&#8221; experience under the guidance of UConn programs. Morneault worked with the School of Business\u2019 startup incubator, Innovation Quest. The men also assisted UConn-affiliated fledgling medical businesses, including QRfertile and Encapsulate, through UConn\u2019s Connecticut Center for Entrepreneurship &amp; Innovation (CCEI). Those experiences led them to develop an entrepreneurial mindset, better perspective on funding, and a deeper appreciation for the intricacies of business creation.<\/p>\n<p>They also benefited from the many business connections they made through UConn. Perhaps none was more significant than the chance to interview for summer internships at Loeb, where Rich Vogel \u201887 (BUS) is a founding partner.<\/p>\n<p>They spent the summer after junior year working at Loeb as interns. Only a few days in, one of their Loeb advisers half-jokingly challenged the men to create a new game.<\/p>\n<p>They did.<\/p>\n<p>And although the name <em>Roast Me<\/em> stuck almost from the beginning, the game itself underwent many iterations over the subsequent months. When they returned to UConn as seniors, they entered and won UConn\u2019s \u2018Get Seeded\u2019 competition. The $500 award allowed them to advance the game\u2019s development.<\/p>\n<p>The university also allowed the entrepreneurs to test their game with UConn students during the spring 2019 semester. Later they refined it with the help of professional comedian Jackie Evans. They engaged UConn alumna Olivia Crosby \u201919 as the game\u2019s graphic designer. And they completed all this while working full-time jobs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe that getting students involved in entrepreneurship early, even before they have an idea, is beneficial. We don\u2019t build companies here. We build entrepreneurs,\u2019\u2019 Noble said. \u201cThen, when they find an idea they like, they can chase after it. At first, they might work on someone else\u2019s innovation or invention, then they have an internship, and then, when they come up with their own great idea, they are ready to go faster.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Eyiah, Mueller and Morneault are eagerly awaiting the game&#8217;s wide release, but that hasn\u2019t stopped them from thinking about their next innovation. Eyiah said he and the team want to use their knowledge to create more businesses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough these businesses will likely not be in the NSFW card-game market, we are confident that our next \u2018play\u2019 will continue to disrupt the digital media landscape,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<p>For the <em>Roast Me<\/em> team, their venture doesn\u2019t stop after the card game.
